“You need to focus!” Kate grumbled once again. She’d been trying to teach me magic for the past half an hour but I kept getting distracted. I didn’t want to hurt Aiden again.

Aiden glared at my great aunt. “Is there any way you could possibly be a little nicer? Maybe she would respond better if you stopped yelling.”

“And maybe you are the problem!” She exclaimed. “It’s obvious she’s worried about hurting you which is stupid considering you’re a werewolf.”

“Hey, you try doing something that could end up injuring someone you love,” I hissed, clenching my fists again. If I didn’t calm down I was liable to set the house on fire.

Kate turned to me, her eyes blazing. “Everyone I love is dead.” I felt a little bit of pity for the woman that was obviously hurting very much. No wonder she was such a… brat.

“I’m sorry,” I said softly.

She shook her head roughly. “This isn’t about me. This is about teaching you how to control your gifts. I suggest Aiden leaves for a little while.”

“How do I know you’re not going to kill my girlfriend if I leave?” Aiden asked suspiciously, making me crack a small smile. Kate seemed mean and stuck up, but I was pretty sure she wouldn’t actually kill me.

“I’ll be fine. Go home and see your family or something,” I told him, wrapping my arms around his waist. I felt guilty for taking up all his time lately.

He looked uncertain. “Are you sure?” He asked, returning my hug. I nodded and reached up to kiss him fleetingly. I was a little embarrassed about kissing him in front of Kate who was now making disgusted coughing noises.

“Alright, call me when you’re done,” he told me before slipping out the front door. I turned to face Kate whose face was scrunched up in distaste.

“That was gross,” she complained and I rolled my eyes. It was just a peck!

I shook my head. “What are we going to start with?” It was about time I learn how to use the powers I’ve had since birth. Even if I had just figured out that I had them…

“You can feel what the humans do, right?” She asked, making me nod. “Well if Milo has humans working for him that could distract you so we’ll cover that first. It’s actually pretty easy to block out their feelings.”

“Are you kidding? I’ve tried everything to stop it,” I replied, thinking of all the headaches I’d gotten from simply being around people.

She smiled a small smile. “Not everything; there are actually several ways to shut it out. Alcohol is one thing that stops it temporarily.”

“I’m not getting drunk every time I want to be around normal people,” I retorted, giving her an even look. It was a ridiculous idea.

She nodded. “Alright, then I’ll teach you another way. You have to meditate first.” I found that hard to believe, but I didn’t question it. I was willing to try anything to stop it.

“Okay,” I breathed, sitting on the floor and crossing my legs like they did in the movies. I didn’t do the whole noise thing though- that would be too weird… After a few minutes, I cracked open my eyes. “Now what am I supposed to do?”

Kate looked irritated. “You need to fully meditate and relax. Then you will have to find a door like thing and shut it.”

“I guess I can try that,” I muttered before shutting my eyes and trying to meditate again.

I wasn’t sure how much time passed before I felt completely relaxed. Now what was it I was supposed to do next? Find something… a door. All I could see right now was darkness. I took another breath and a small flash of light came from somewhere. I spun in a circle without actually moving. And that was when I saw it.
