[25] I Hope You Enjoyed Your Stay

Katniss's Point of View

The blackness behind my eyelids is suddenly everywhere, I can feel the darkness in my bones. Every part of me is numb. Am I dead? No, I can't be.

Then the numbness stops. My body feels like it's being torn apart piece by piece, flames of pain take over every ounce of my being.

I don't know how long it lasts, but suddenly BAM! I'm okay again, I can feel warm sheets under me, the smell of stew is in the air. I'm home I think.

The sound of a door opening then closing, footsteps coming near me. My eyes are still closed, I'm still trying to decide if this is real. A voice comes from somewhere else in the house, Peeta's voice. Why is he here? In my home?

"Katniss," he calls, confusing me. "Katniss? You awake yet?"

I don't respond, still trying to decide whether or not I want this to be real.

"Katniss?" He calls again. I hear his footsteps draw nearer until I guess they're about a foot or two away from the bed I lay in.

I slowly opened my eyes. Peeta stood before me, but... he looked older. Stronger. A couple scars dotted his skin, his blue eyes held a certain emotion that I couldn't comprehend in his normally happy eyes. He smiles at me, though it didn't seem as wide as usual.

"Peeta?" I managed to say. He sat on the side of my bed, gently pushing some hair out of my face. The feeling of his touch is so alien, but part of me welcomes it.

"Hey, you've been asleep for a while." Peeta smiles at me. "Do you remember what happened?"

"N-No," it's the truth, I don't remember anything about this world, so how would I remember why I've been asleep for so long.

"You were walking down the stairs and you suddenly collapsed," Peeta explained. "I guess you slipped on some ice or something."

"Oh." No more information from him I guess.

I sat up, taking it slow so that I wouldn't get a headache. Peeta said something about soup before walking from the room and telling me to stay put. What the hell? Why was I in a house with Peeta? What happened to Peeta?

As my eyes searched the room for something familiar my gaze landed on something. A book. Leather bound, lots of pages, it sat on my night stand. Was it the plants book my father made? No, it couldn't be, that book was much thinner and old looking.

Carefully, I reached for it, holding it delicately in my hand and setting it on my lap. Memory Book was written on the front in beautiful cursive calligraphy, I can only assume it's Peeta's writing. I gently open it up to the first page, where a few paragraphs are written. I begin to read.

There once was the Dark Days, when thirteen districts rebelled against the Capitols oppressive rule.  District 13 was annihilated, leaving 12 Districts to live on under the Capitol's control. The Hunger Games were formed, where each district had to supply one female and male tribute to fight to the death in a arena as punishment for rebelling.

This much I knew, but the next paragraph was all news to me.

75 years later the districts had had enough, and so the 2nd Rebellion began. Lead by the victors of the previous Hunger Games, the Capitol was brought down in ways that no one thought possible. By mocking the Capitol in their own games, the districts fought against the government that had been created for them. District 13 revealed itself to the masses again and helped lead the fight to freedom. Of the many victors, only seven remained alive after the battle, including the Mockingjay Katniss Everdeen. The President Cornelius Snow and President of District 13 Alma Coin were publicly executed and Commander Taylor was assigned to be new president of Panem.
