Say you'll remember me

27. What if ?

Over the next few days Natasha tried her best to keep her distance form Bucky, however it didn't go unnoticed. Natasha was sat alone in the kitchen when she felt someone sit next to her.

"Who are you?"

Natasha's heart skipped a beat when she recognised the voice, she turned to face James.

She looked at him confused for a few moments before answering.

"You know who I am, we met the other day."

Bucky shook his head.
"I mean, who are you? I know you, don't I?"

Natasha's pulse quickened. Did he remember after all?

"I know I know you. I felt it the other night but I thought I was just being stupid."

Natasha shook her head.

She didn't know what to tell him.

"How did I know you?" He questioned.

Natasha sighed quietly, thinking about what to say. She didn't want to over pressurise him when he already had so much to deal with.

"We...we're just friends", she said.

Bucky nodded.
"From when I ran away from hydra?"

Natasha nodded, surprised he remembered running away.

Bucky stared at her for a few seconds.

He could tell something wasn't right between him and Natasha.

He was a spy after all.

"How are you here now?" He asked her.

Natasha grimaced.

"I was frozen, just like you."

Bucky nodded.

He looked at Natasha for a while before speaking again.

"Did I hurt you? It's just, I don't remember and you always seem...scared around me", Bucky asked.

Natasha smiled weakly.

She wasn't afraid, she just loved him and found it almost impossible to stand in the same room as him without wishing him to remember.

She knew it was selfish of her but she couldn't help it.

She missed him.

"I'm not scared of you, it's just been a long time since I've seen you", she replied, trying to sound strong.

Bucky nodded.

"I will remember you Natasha, I promise", he told her before walking away.

Natasha felt her insides melt as he walked away from her.

She couldn't help but hope he would keep his promise.
