Time skip--- you: age 11

A few years had passed and Jackal would meet me on that same hill every few weeks. Most of the time I was there alone and just stared at the sky, but when Jackal was there he would play tricks on me and show me his new techniques. He says he doesn't use magic, but I came pretty close to mimicking his explosion technique. He also learned how to control it so I won't explode if I accidentally touched him. He says he learned it from the underworld king, whatever that means.

I ran up the hill as fast as I could. I could barely catch my breath because I was so excited. Jackal says he has something special to give me today.

"Jackal!"

"Yo Phoenix!"

I bumped him playfully and he pulled me into a hug and pressed his knuckles on my head.

"Oww! Hey, stop that!"

"You're so big now!"

"Yeah...that's what humans do, Jackal. They grow up."

I spoke in a sarcastic tone and stuck my tongue out.

"So...what did you want to show me?"

I was too excited to wait. I looked up at him with big eyes, almost like I was getting candy for the first time.

"Haha...calm down."

He reached in his pocket and pulled out a small gem. It was just small enough to fit in my tiny palm as he handed it to me. It glowed bright as I let the sun's rays reflect off of it.

"Its a diamond. I found it after I destroyed some rocks on my last job."

"Wow...it's so pretty. I wish I could go on jobs like that."

"I'm glad you like it."

"Jackal...why won't you ever tell me about your guild?"

"Um, well, it's complicated...let's just leave it at that."

"OK..."

I threw the diamond into my pocket and looked down at the ground. Then Jackal's big hand suddenly ruffled my hair.

"Jackal!"

"Don't look so down...I'll tell you what, meet me here tomorrow, and I'll take you with me. Please, come with me."

"What? Jackal, I can't just leave...my family-"

"I'm not coming back here..."

His ears fell and his tail drooped. I don't think he was planning to tell me this.

"Why not?"

"...because I can't...please Phoenix, don't stay here."

"..."

I looked at his sad expression. I though and thought about my decision for a long time. I was forced to weigh the pros and cons of staying and leaving. What a could I do? What should I do? After a long time of thinking, I finally made up my mind and looked back at Jackal with a serious face.

"Fine."

His ears perked up and a smile grew on his face.

"Yes! Be here tomorrow, Phoenix! If you're late I can't wait for you!"

He celebrated with a cheery face and then left me alone. I had no idea why he wanted me to go with him, and I had no idea what was about to happen.

---

I awoke early the next morning and packed my stuff. I left early in the afternoon and headed to the hill. I made sure no one noticed me. When I arrived at the hill I was alone.

"He's not here yet."

I waited for a long time. Hours passed, but Jackal still hasn't shown up. Where is he? My patience grew thin and I was beginning to lose faith that he would show up. My hand clutched the diamond tightly as I continued to wait. Then my eyes were suddenly drawn to a large figure that was making it's way toward the town.

"What is that!"

I stood up and my mouth hung open in surprise.

That was the beginning of Deliora's destruction.

---

I was suddenly jolted awake with tears in my eyes.

"Another nightmare..."

I whispered to myself. I looked to see Laxus still resting in his bed. I don't know where Jackal was, I don't even know if he showed up, but if he had...I might never have met Laxus. I kissed his forehead once again and smiled gently.

"Don't leave me too Laxus."
