I woke up on a soft bed, I couldn't remember where I was, the wall I was facing were a pale lilac but that didn't trigger any memories, I sat up, and surveyed my surroundings.
Other than the lilac walls, another was covered in grey wood effect wallpaper, the room and it's white furniture felt familiar but unfamiliar at the same time. Was this my family home?
I heard voices from downstairs so decided to introduce myself.
Silently, I walked down the hallway, taking in the large amount of photos that studded the cream walls of the hallway. I featured in some, but the majority were of them with other people, friends, I guess.
It really just highlighted how I was a stranger in my family.
Stopping by an open door, I peered into the pile of boxes and the light grey walls and sloping ceiling and creeking hardwood floors. I grabbed the first box I laid my eyes on, and opened it up, revealing a blanket, my blanket. Smiling, I felt the soft material between my fingertips before placing it on the box next to it. Underneath the blanket was about a dozen cassettes, one had a handwritten label. It was the only one with a handwritten label.
"Dimples?" I turned around to see three pairs of eyes, the woman who had similar features to mine ran up and hugged me.
"God, Mia, I've missed you." I whispered to her as we hugged.
"I've missed you too, Soph, so much." she replied, "we didn't really have time to get your room ready..."
"No, no it's okay." I brushed her off, I was the one imposing in them.
"You kept all this stuff? All my stuff?"
"We wanted everything to be the same if you came back." She explained, glancing back at Dom, then, lowering her voice she added "Dom wont admit it but he found it hard, when he came back and they had taken you."
Dom cleared his throat and we broke apart "Mia, could you take Sophia to get some stuff." He asked and Mia nodded, he took out his bank card and gave it to her but she refused, Dom rolled his eyes and shook his head "don't be too long we've got barbecue tonight, I thought it would be a good opportunity to introduce Dimples to everybody."
We got in Mia's Camaro and drove off, "who counts as everyone, Mia?" I wasn't sure whether seeing a bunch of new people right now, I wasn't a social creature, I liked to be left alone in a garage to tinker.
"Just a few people, it isn't going to be like one of Dom's parties." She promised, shaking her head, "remember that time that you hung up a sign saying that you could only enter if you had chocolate milk."
"Keep out stranger dangers, unless you have chocolate milk. But you're still a stranger, so just leave the chocolate milk by the door. I'll know where to look." I recited, chocolate milk became a running joke in our family after that. Two months later Daddy died and we were all separated. No more family.
"Yeah, such a wordsmith." She snorted.
Shopping passed quickly, after a while I stopped for a coffee, I wasn't hard to buy for, especially considering I lived in pretty basic apparel which consisted of hoodies, tee-shirts and skinny jeans. Mia headed into the phone shop, and came out fifteen minutes later with a paper bag containing the latest iPhone, she placed it on the table and asked "anywhere else you want to go to." She saw my expression "not IKEA- we don't have enough room in the back of the car."
"Can we go to the shoe shop. The one with Doc Martens, I've always wanted a pair of Doc Martens." I asked gently, I had my old Vans which were getting kinda tattered after the year, a pair of boots would be awesome.
We got home and I changed into a pair of black skinny jeans and a plain white tee shirt before going down and meeting the rest of the family, Dom was cooking on the barbecue and a lady I didn't know stood next to him, Brian and Mia were playing with their son, Jack, and a few people I didn't know were milling around.
Grabbing a can of cherry Coke, I turned around and smacked the lady who was standing by Dom earlier. "Oh god, oh God, I'm so sorry." I mumbled "Jesus, I'm here for less than twenty four hours and I'm already hurting people."
"It's okay, Sophia?" The lady questioned with an easygoing smile.
"Yep, or Soph or Dimples and there's probably a lot more if you listen to Dom." I replied, "you're the lady that answered the phone."
She pulled her wavy brown hair from out of her eyes and smiled "I'm Letty," she answered "oh... oh you're his partner?"
"Dinners ready!" Dom yelled in his deep voice and everyone practically ran to any seat at the table.
I sat in the middle of Letty and one of the men I didn't know who was the first one to grab a roll, "Roman got first bite- he's got grace!" Brian yelled whilst pointing a finger at Roman, he sighed and we all put our hands together and looked expectedly at him "thank you Lord for helping us rebuild the Toretto Family Home, thank you for letting us overcome the events of the last year and also thank you for bringing Sophia home," he preached and we all finished with amen, moments later people were stuffing there faces with the awesome char-grilled food and drinking beers and cherry Coke in my case.
"Hey, Tej, isn't there a street race on tonight?" Dom asked the other guy I didn't know, "one at our normal spot," Tej replied, Dom smiled "let's show Sophia how to be a Toretto."
Everyone walked to the garage, Letty got in 1972 Plymouth Barracuda, Tej in a yellow Lamborghini, Roman in a pure white Bugatti Veyron and Brian in a sliver and blue Nissan Skyliner GTR, "hey Dom, is there a car I can ride?" I asked, hoping to be able to drive the Charger, "yeah take the Plymouth- it can be your car," he said pointing to a black and red Plymouth Road Runner.
I smiled happily as I roared the engine into life and followed Dom's Charger.
