Chapter 10 | My Girl"Are you nervous?" Sabrina questioned as she tied his tie for him. She'd watch Carter struggle to tie it for about five minutes before she intervened.
"A little, I've never met a girl's parents before. I don't even know what to say to them. What if you say daddy at the table and me and your dad give you our attention?"
Sabrina laughed and shook her head. "I don't even call you daddy."
"Yet," Carter said with a wink. "It'll come baby, just wait on it." She rolled her eyes with her smile still planted on her lips.
"Are you nervous about meeting my brother at all?" Carter shrugged and looked down at her white heels that complimented her red dress. Carter hadn't put much thought into meeting her brother since he felt her father was his biggest hurdle.
"Not really, haven't really thought much about it."
"Okay, how about I'll see if my mom can get sick and not be able to go? I don't want you to be pushed into something you're not ready for yet." Carter nodded in agreement and Sabrina pulled out her phone to call her mom.
"Hey Mama," Sabrina said after her mother picked up on the fourth ring. Sabrina glanced at Carter who was now tying his shoes for the fifth time since he put them on.
"Hey Brina is everything okay? I don't think we're running late yet, are we?" Her step-mother said in a rush on the phone. They were always late to everything they decided to attend and no one knows why. Sabrina had a hunch that it had something to do with them taking clothes off instead of putting clothes on.
"No you guys aren't running late, but I was kind of wondering if you could play sick so you and daddy can't go."
"But why? Your father and I haven't eaten since noon just so we'd be able to eat everything we pay for."
"Carter is scared of mee-"
"I'm not scared." Carter cut Sabrina off in the middle of the phone call. The last time Carter recalled being scared of something or someone was before his mother died. He was raised to fear no one and he followed what his parents embedded into him since he was in kindergarten. It was just the thought of Sabrina and his potential relationship riding on this night what he was nervous about.
Sabrina looked back at him and gave him a look not believing him at all. "He's supposedly not scared, but I know for a fact his nervous and I don't want to pressure him since it's so soon."
"Hmm..." Rose said over the line as if she was pondering on if she wanted to do Sabrina the favor. "You have to promise that we'll meet him sometime in the future. Don't wait almost two years to introduce us like you did with Chris." Sabrina rolled her eyes with a smile planted on her face. She wasn't the type to want a guy to meet her parents because she held her parents so dear to her heart.
"I promise." Sabrina said into the phone honestly. She wasn't going to hide Carter away for forever; it was just going to be until she felt confident in her relationship.
"Okay, well I got to go so I can play my part. Now you have to hold up your part of the bargain."
"I will mama, don't worry. Hope you still have a good night." Sabrina said apologetically.
"Oh we will don't worry about that." Rose said with a chuckle. "See you soon." Sabrina hung up the phone with a smile on her face and a shake of her head. Sabrina put her phone back into her clutch and walked over to Carter who was still working on tying his shoes.
"My parents aren't coming anymore, but you said you were fine with my brother, right?" Sabrina questioned to make sure that they'd be in the right atmosphere for them to meet. Sabrina honestly just wanted to shut down the idea of her and Carter having their first dinner date together with more people than what she'd originally pictured in her mind when she daydreamed about it.
