Break-ups have never been, and quite possibly never will, be easy. But, you and Sam have been together for 6 years and you have enjoyed every waking moment of it. Unfortunately, Sam isn't quite Sam anymore and you are not going to deal with the recoil of his-poorly-made decisions. So, you broke up.

"Um, your stuff is in the brown box labeled 'y/n'." Sam brings up his hand to point at the heavily taped cardboard box that was just collecting dust in the corner.

"No shit Sherlock." Normally, things like this wouldn't slide out of your mouth like that. But lately, it has been seeming as if you no longer have a filter. Everything just flows out without thinking. He slightly looks down to your eyes as he towers over you (even when he's two yards away), clearly annoyed. "Well, I'm going to get out of here. If there is anything else I need to grab, I'll-" you start. Your hands go over to pick up the box as he interrupts you.

"Call you." He walks over to the nightstand and grabs your Volkswagon car keys. He sets them on your finger and they just hang there, dangling. "Sorry, I knew what you were going to say. See you later."

Without giving him any acknowledgement, "Bye Sam."

-

As you ascend the green, metal staircase as you take one last breath of the stuffy air. Flashbacks flood your mind as one last tear falls, the last tear you'll cry after your breakup.

When you both ended it, it wasn't very hard. Both of you hit a rocky spot in your relationship that neither of you could deal with. Sam chose to do something that you could never forgive, something that you will never understand.

The clunky metal door slides open and fresh air engulfs your nostrils. You press the lock button on your car keys and hear it honk a few times. The trunk is popped and you throw the box in. Curiously, you rip it open, exerting more energy than you thought you would need, and file through the top components. Laying caddy-cornered on the very top was a letter on loose, lined scrap paper that was written a few days ago,

I'm stupid, I get that. I know that you could never possibly forgive me, and I have unfortunately come to accept that. But, don't loose faith on everyone else in this world. I know that I did not stay completely honest, but you deserve the best love anyone could give. You honestly deserve everything.

A part of me will always love you, no matter what. Call me anytime, 720-883-9185. And if I don't answer, you know the drill.

- Sam

He's changed his number. That's the drill.

Hearing the innocence and desperation that tinged in his voice throughout the letter sparked something. Your fingers glide across the rim of your trunk as it is pulled down. The note is still in your hand, along with the dangling keys. And in that moment, something comes across yourself. Neither of you had a proper goodbye. Sam will always be a part of you and even if the next time you see him is tomorrow, you need to say goodbye. You throw your keys into the front drivers seat of the car and run back inside.

Your feet have a quick pace down the metal stairs and you jog back into the room where you and Sam once were. The door flies open and you see the back of his head come up from looking down at a scrapbook. He takes a sniff and uses his elbow to wipe his nose. "What." With no question in his voice does it come out and you were surprised to not hear any excitement of your arrival.

Your humble hands reach over to grab his scratched up ones, but at the moment they touch, he pulls his away. His giant, masculine body turns slowly and he bows his head down once again. Your hand reaches over to pull the hair that covered his face to the side and he just takes a deep breath. His neck arches up, with his hair flying behind his ears. And then, you see it. You see all of the mistakes that he made, the decisions you don't understand, and the reasons as to why you can't trust him. His eyes are a deep and sickening black.
