PRESENT TIME

I'm not exactly sure how I got to school today.

My mind was zoned out while my body went on autopilot, but somehow I had managed to get inside of the school with no problems whatsoever.

And this wasn't the first time something like this happened. Sometimes I'll dissolve into my own world at random times, especially while driving. That's the worst, when I lose focus on the road. And I'll catch myself in the middle of my daydreaming, snap myself out of it, only to realize I was halfway to my destination with no recollection of how. It's gotten to the point where even I admit that I really shouldn't have a driver's license.

This time however, I caught myself losing focus when I reached school instead of on my way here.

You can't blame me though, not when my dad got a call in the morning that a witness in his investigation had woken up from a coma.

It was their only witness.

Everything seemed to be finally coming together, I could tell because whenever dad was close to cracking a case he would take the lucky penny that was underneath a Bamboo plant that we had in the hallway and he'd put it in his pocket. I always checked the plant, because nothing excited me more than when he'd finally solve a crime. And the penny's been missing for a few days, which meant they were close. So having a witness wake up from a coma would definitely help them put the final pieces of it all together.

And maybe then he'd finally be able to tell us what was happening. The entire state was losing it's mind coming up with possible theories.

I tried not to think about it, because nothing good has ever come out of my involvement in a case. Like that one time I was convinced my 70 year old neighbor was a mafia leader who was plotting to take down the governor.

And yes, I was 100% wrong.

But trying not to think about this case only made me think about it even more.

Which is why I was so out of mind that I had to go to the bathroom before class started and splash some water on my face. I was practically still dreaming, thinking about all the possible scenarios and outcomes of the case as I stared at my reflection in the bathroom mirror. I wiped the remaining water off my face and took a deep breath.

Stop thinking about it, stop thinking about it, stop thinking about it -

"You look like a panda."

His voice didn't even startle me anymore, no matter how unexpected it was. He could pop up in the middle of the night with no warning and I wouldn't even flinch.

I looked in the mirror and saw his reflection from the corner. He was leaning against one of the stall doors, his arms folded across his chest as he looked back at me.
