Now or Never

One foot in front of the other, I kept walking. People had collapsed along the way, but I wasn't going to be one of them. I had to stay strong. I had to tell my newfound friends my plan.

The idea came to me quickly. Which was good, since we had only hours left till we were at the Asylum.

"Marcus, Martinus..." I started my sentence, then waited. Started again, saying only bits at a time.

Having explained my plan, I loosened one of my hair pins, letting my matted locks fall down over my face. Working quickly, I unlocked my handcuffs just as we neared a narrow canyon, where only one person could pass at a time. Guards went only to the front and back of each line, allowing us to work without being noticed. I handed the hair pin to Martinus, hoping he could unlock himself.

We walked on in silence, our unlocked handcuffs around our wrists. The grey stone walls rose around us. The canyon started widening, then closed in again as a river flowed in. A sheer drop fell down to the river side, a rock wall rose on the other side of the path. I gulped, thinking about what we had to do... And threw myself over the edge of the cliff. It was now or never.
