" The Doctor kept saying, look ..look ..there it is ... can you see it?, but I can't... There was no baby in there ... then Doctor said, I can't see the baby because it's very small... And daddy, .." Abeer grinned at his Father, .." It was like a bean ... " he laughed.
"What did the doctor say about your Mother?" Arnav asked, the only thing he wanted to know.
Abeer rolled towards his Father and probing himself on his elbow, rested his face between his palm. " She said Amma is fine ... Amma should eat properly .. Be happy .. And baby and Amma will be fine .. " he grinned again.
Arnav gave him a small smile. " Good job .. " As staying away from his pregnant wife was the only way to keep him sane, he had told Abeer to accompany his Mother to every Doctor's appointment. And keep him updated with Khushi's health.
"Remember my phone number?" Arnav asked his son, and his son recited his cell number correctly. "Good.. .. Remember, any problem, anything the doctor says .. or Khushi not feeling well, you call me immediately... Keep a close watch on your Mother..
Don't miss anything.. "Abeer nodded his head seriously. "Yes, daddy .. I won't.. .I will do your work properly ... " he said, all serious.
Arnav looked at his cute son and his eyes softened. " Thank you so much, Abeer .. "
"I will do anything for you, daddy.." he sat upright. "I love you..."
Guilt consumed him at once at his son's sweet confession. He too loves him, but has always held himself back. He knows he has always been wrong to blame Abeer for his sister's death. His sister had the choice, and she chose her son's life above hers. Abeer is the innocent one. If he wants to blame anyone, he should blame his sister. She is the one who made the choice to leave him.
So why can't he still accept Abeer wholeheartedly? He guessed it was the awkwardness. From the time Abeer was born, he had done nothing but blame him for his sister's death. And afterwards when he made peace with whatever fate had dished him was not at all Abeer's fault, things were too awkward between them. Abeer doesn't remember anything, but how can he forget all the ugly accusations he had hurled at him? It was still between them, making things uncomfortable for him.
"Daddy, don't you love me?" Abeer asked and inched closer to his Father.
"Uhh?"
"When I tell Amma that I love her, she tells, I love you, too.." Abeer smiled and looked at his Father expectantly.
"Oh..I .." Arnav just stared at his son, has he ever said that to anyone aloud? Such confessions never comes out of him. " Abeer...I .." he frowned. Why can't he just say it? Abeer's chin had started quivering and he knew soon his son will be all waterworks. In so many ways he is just like his Amma. And he must do something soon. .."I ... I ... I love you, too ... there!" He sighed, wiping the perspiration of his forehead with the back of his palm.
Abeer grinned and launched himself in his Father's arm.
Arnav caught him. All the awkwardness between them was certainly from his side only, nothing from Abeer. In the last few days Abeer had spent with him, he has overcome all his awkwardness.
"I can't, Amma ... It's between me and Daddy .. " he said in his babyish voice.
"Please, Ebu ... a tiny bit?" Khushi arched her eyebrow at her Son. She knew he was hiding something. He just has this look when he is keeping something from her. And that something involves her husband. She was dying to know what it is.
"No!" He shook his head with all the seriousness of a 3 years old.
Khushi pouted... "Ebu .. please.....?"
"No .. I don't share your secret with Daddy... I will not share Daddy's secret with you.."
Khushi gave up. "Allrighty, my loyal Son..." she picked him up and nested him on her hip. " So how was your day with your daddy?"
"Very nice .." Aryan smiled. " After dinner we went out for ice-cream ...And you know what? Daddy promised me that he will show me his office tomorrow.. he will pick me up in morning... And you know what?" He asked, barely containing his excitement
"What?" Khushi asked.
"Today he said to me, 'I love you, too'"..
Khushi stopped suddenly and stared at her son. "Whaat?"
"Uh-huhh" Abeer smiled.
"Really?"
"Yes...he did.." Abeer confirmed.
Khushi couldn't believe it. In nearly 3 years of her marriage, she had never heard him say that to anyone. Devi Maiya knows how many tricks she had tried to make him say these three words to her, but to avail. This is unbelievable.
" I can't believe it..." Khushi whispered.
"I never lie .."
"Oh...I know that, baby ... I mean, I do believe you .. but it's hard to believe that your dad said that to you...He had never said that to me.."
"But he said to me.." Abeer grinned ..
"No need to gloat about it ... "Khushi twisted her mouth, and then grinned at her Son... " That calls for another treat...Jalebis? "
"Yes, Amma!" Ebu smacked a kiss on his Mother's cheek.
And together they started making their favorite jalebis to celebrate their first victory.
