evening falls as i do
helplessly purpling the sky
orange halos of street lamps
block out the stars
how human this night
mist dancing on the air
clouds of tiny droplets
swirling through my hair
my curls rise like tendrils of smoke
i could dissolve into this night
my lungs like wings beneath my ribs
from here i could rise
tide water under the moon
all this artificial light would pale
above the low hanging clouds
i can hear the stars
singing like sirens
tempting the fathoms of eternity
to part for me
stretched out like blankets on the grass
those many nights ago
i can still feel the dew between my fingers
hear cicadas trilling in the trees
coyotes howling in the middle distance
their voices hungry as ours
working their muscles toward death.
