i could find an easy love
an apple that falls off the tree on its own accord
a patient wait until gravity puts someone in front of me
a casual dalliance with a person
who knows more about the want in my eyes
than the reservation in my chest
I could find a simple fling
happy but not full
content but not brimming with anticipation
to say yes to a date
or an open door to the bedroom
or a ring that they probably searched half-heartedly for
i could compromise for lukewarm passion
a placid but mundane curve of fate
sending me straight to the clouds
but never reaching the stars
or i could look for you
find the gap that begs to be filled
not with a perfect puzzle piece but
an ever-changing lump of clay
that takes me places i could never imagine
if i were to choose what would make me just happy
i could look for you
the complicated history
the satisfaction of knowing that this did not come easily
the arguing not too much but enough because holding on is worth it
the excitement because we made love our own
i will find you
a rough monolith in a field of sanded down sculptures
touch your grooves that somehow match
the imprints of my fingertips just right
and i won't settle for anyone less
easy isn't what i aim for
easy is cookie-cutter idealism
written a hundred times over for big screens
and people who grew up knowing
exactly where their hearts would land them
but i'm not searching for an ending
i could have guessed from the very beginning
i'm here for unwritten promise
a less than perfect fit for a better than average story
i don't care if it takes longer to get there
my life will be that much more meaningful
knowing that i'm fighting for you
