"Here, do you want a hat?" Marci asks, setting her crocheting needles down and handing me and homemade red beanie.
"Sure." I take the gift and inspect it. "I didn't even know you knew how to crochet. This looks professional!" I tell my friend with a smile.
"Thanks." She says. "My mom and I used to make stuff like this when I was younger." Marci pauses for a moment. I think she might cry, but instead she continues. "Like riding a bike, I guess."
I put the beanie on my head over my mess of curls. It is warm and cozy, and fits great. I decide to keep it on even though I am just in bed. I can never get quite warm enough anymore, anyway. At least now my hair will stay out of sight.
"Hey! How come I don't get a hat?" Benji complains. We chuckle at him a bit.
"Don't worry, kid. Yours is next." Marci assures him, standing up to go choose new yarn. I smile with Benji. He somehow still possesses the ability to cheer me up. Even if only for a moment every day. We need all the happiness we can get. If the cold and hunger don't kill us, the depression will. I hope he stays as happy and strong as he can, for as long as he can... because once thoughts like mine or Marci's start pouring in, there is no stopping them.
A/N- Surprise! Look how fast I'm getting these updates out there ;) As always, thanks for reading and remember to comment/VOTE! I would love to know what you guys are thinking, so if you have questions, predictions, critiques, etc. please leave a comment!
