Leo chops more wood in the morning and then collects snow to boil for drinking water. He also digs a deeper, better waste hole outside the garage to dump the bathroom bucket in. I dump the dirty cat litter into a big garbage can in the garage. Marci keeps up on the fire and crochets socks, since I told her to stay in bed. Benji takes care of the cat and begins a new book. I cook our small meals. Benji and Leo wash the dishes with a big tub of soapy water in the living room. Marci insists that she told me everything that happened the other day.

I continually make eye contact with Leo, without even realizing it sometimes. Throughout the day, I catch him looking at me. He is sweet... with good intentions anyway. After all, he's done nothing but help us. I want to have him here. He makes me feel safer somehow... Like nothing bad could happen if he never leaves. But my brain still keeps finding the down sides: one more mouth to feed, one more potential threat, one more thing to worry about.

"I didn't realize how much better wood fires are than paper ones. These last so much longer!" Marci says, happily warming up beside the flames. Benji drinks from a glass of water that Leo just brought him. I feel warmer and calmer than I have in weeks. Leo looks at me once more and smiles.

Maybe he could stay...
