"Maybe we should make a new list?" I suggest. We are all bored. Leo beat Benji at Risk earlier this morning. The excitement lasted a whole six minutes.
"I think that is an excellent idea! After all, you've got another mouth to feed." Leo agrees.
"Fine, but you guys do it. Counting makes me sad. I'll be napping if you need me." Marci says as she gets into bed. She adjusts a bit and pulls the blankets up to her closed eyelids.
"Yeah, I don't do organizing." Benji adds from his place by the fire.
"Yeah, yeah, we've got it. You just read your book, kiddo." Leo responds. I chuckle. Benji does as he's told and opens up Peter Pan.
"Alright, I'll organize and count, you write a list." I say, poking Leo's arm and heading toward the shelves. I count and re-arrange our supplies, and Leo writes down the numbers I tell him. It doesn't take very long. I wish it would take longer for two reasons; I am tired of all the time I've got on my hands, and less time to count equals less food on the shelves. Less to survive on... When we finish, Leo hands me the paper he's written on and I review.

I take Leo into the living room to explain to him what our "last resort" is. He immediately starts laughing.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. Listen, that much of a narcotic drug can kill ya, and I don't know, the weed... Marci saw it in a movie once. 'So you can die happy." It's funny, get it?" I explain, but end up laughing right along with Leo.
"I like it. It's got style... for a suicide plan, I mean." He says, still smiling. "Have you or Marci ever even been high before?"
"Pff, no! Have you seen us? We're like the whitest girls ever. Plus, you know, the whole nursing school thing." I say, making fun of Marci and myself with Leo in this frozen room.
"It'd probably be fun to watch, not going to lie. You'll have to include me on this blazin' adventure." He says, leaning against the couch and laughing at his own joke. I imagine Marci and I getting high to be a lot like our first time getting drunk- losing focus, laughing a lot, falling over, et cetera. Leo's right, it would be hilarious.
"Are you a stoner or something? Like one of those pot enthusiasts?" I ask him jokingly.
"Absolutely. I'll sell you two pounds for a nickel! Mary Jane is my middle name!" He replies dramatically. His laughter is contagious. His smile is intoxicating. I can feel heat radiating from his body to my own. I want to move closer. I want to be swept up in the jokes and sarcasm and laughter and normality of young adulthood... but I stop laughing.
"Hey, thank you." I say more seriously.
"For what?" Leo asks, piercing me with his oceanic depths of eyes.
"For saving Marce. For helping out here, making Benji happy... for making me laugh this much for the first time since... Well, for making me forget." I explain, looking away and into the dancing flames. Leo takes my hand and squeezes, drawing my attention back to those eyes.
"You are most welcome, Adelaide." He says. His skin is warm against my own and I fear the thought of ever letting go. Who are you? I wonder. What is this power you have over me? Leo smiles once more and says, "Now off to bed with you."
I smile back and obey. Our handsseparate, and off to bed I go.
