“Miss Y/L/N, Why are you so late?” I obviously can’t tell my teacher about Dan, so I quickly come up with an excuse.

“There was traffic, sir. We do live quite far away.” I say quietly.

“Okay, Y/N. Take your seat.” I cross the room in shame and take my seat next to Lyle. “And what do we have here, another late comer? Why are you so late, Mr Howell?” Dan saunters in and thrusts his leather backpack on the table next to Sophie.

“I make my own rules, sir.” Dan plants his feet on the table and stretches back – throwing a glance towards me. He makes me sick. He held me up this morning and asked me to do his homework, threatened me to do this homework.

“Come up with a better excuse next time. Okay guys; go to your next lesson. Dan and Y/N, can you stay back a second?” Everyone stampedes out, leaving only me, Dan and our form tutor in the room. “Why are you two so late every day? Is there something going on between you two?”

“Yeah, I obviously want to spend my mornings kissing her.” He says scowling.

“What is it then?” I contemplate whether to tell our teacher he’s bullying me or not.

“Dan,” I begin, only to be greeted with the most disgusted face in existence from Dan. “Dan…needed help with his homework.” I blurt out, scrunching up my face in agony.

“Is that all? That’s great guys, I thought it was something serious. Here’s the deal, I’ll re-arrange the seating plan so you two can sit at the back together and do your homework in form. Thanks for talking to me, I’ll see you tomorrow morning on time.” He says, gesturing us out. I’m horrified. Dan is the worst person I could ever want to spend time with and now I have to spend every morning helping him with his homework.

“Good save, Y/N. I can’t wait to spend every morning with you.” He says sarcastically.

“The feeling’s mutual. Just leave me alone, okay? I’ve had enough of you picking on me for no reason.”

The next day, something’s different. I’m sat next to Dan in form and he passes me a piece of paper, which I assume is his homework for today.

“You fill it out. I’m here to ‘help’, remember?” I say stiffly through gritted teeth.

“Just read it.” He says, shoving the paper towards me again. Carelessly, I unfold the paper and read through it.

“Dear, Y/N. I’m sorry I’ve been picking on you. What you said to me yesterday really helped me to realise what I’ve been doing. If you could forgive me, I’d be really grateful. Thank you, have a good day. From, Dan.” I read the note aloud and start to cry internally. He just made the effort to be my friend, and I was so negative towards him. “Dan…I…”

“It’s okay, Y/N. I appreciate if you don’t want to be friends. I just thought it would make things better, you know?”

“Dan…I’m sorry.”

Every day from then on got better, to the point where he was coming round my house to do homework. Who would have thought someone could change that quickly? Dan is now my best friend.
