Too long for a one-shot, too short for a book. Not going to be either.
==========================
You stared at the heavy metal door, taking a deep breath to steady yourself. Your heart was pounding out of your chest, reminding you of when you were kids, as you stared at the nameplate on the side of the door.
You know him, you reminded yourself, putting your hand on the handle. You hesitated, remembering exactly who you were visiting.
*
You ran through the grassy fields, hearing thundering footsteps behind you. Suddenly, you were grabbed on the shoulder, being pushed down. You laughed as your best friend rolled off you.
"That was fun. You're it!" he shouted, laughing. Your heart was thundering as you panted for breath.
"I gotta go, my mom wants me home before seven," you told him sadly. He sighed, the smile wiping off his perfect, pink lips.
"Okay," he muttered dejectedly. Then he looked hopeful. "Can we do this again tomorrow?"
"We have school tomorrow, silly," you reminded him.
"Recess, then," he announced. You nodded, smiling, and he walked you home.
*
You shook your head, clearing yourself from your thoughts, and pushed down the handle.
Opening the door, you teared up at the sight of the man, sleeping on the cold, metal bed. Dirty stains and blood surrounded you. Every time you came here, it got worse.
*
"Smile for the camera, (Y/N)!" he shouted, grinning. You grinned, staring into the lens. There was a quick flash, and he lowered the phone. "You look awesome!"
"Let me see!" you demanded, holding out your hand. He handed his red-cased phone to you, and you stared at the picture. You were wearing a black t-shirt and knee-length skirt, with a flower crown that your friend made for you. "You take the best pictures," you complimented.
"I only take good pictures with you," he smiled, walking closer to you. Your heart was beating in your chest, feeling like it was going a million miles per minute. He smiled at you.
"(Y/N), I've been thinking about this for a while," he said quietly, almost into your ear. "And... I really like you. As in... more than a friend. We've known each other for a while... do you want to be my girlfriend?" he asked.
"Yes, of course!" you screamed, hugging him. This was the best day of your life.
*
You stepped closer, not sure if he was awake. His head moved to you, and his dark eyes glinted in the sunlight. For a second, he was the man you once knew.
The sane one.
"What are you doing here?" he asked gruffly. That man quickly disappeared.
"I wanted to see you," you answered nervously.
"W... why?" he whispered.
"Because I miss you."
"No... it was my fault," he growled, staring at you with his dark eyes, the colour of the darkest melted chocolate.
"No, it wasn't-"
"Yes, it was!" he shouted, startling you. He's never terrified you, ever. He was always gentle, always caring. But... not anymore....
