yoongi

i was walking down the staircase, yoonho following behind me. it was the night of prom, and i was nervous yet excited beyond belief. i glanced up at my brother, smiling brightly. he was also in a black tux, although he'd swapped his tie out for a bow tie.

we stepped into the living room, both of our dates already waiting. my mother had disappeared to find her camera.

hoseok and i had been dating for nearly six months now. yoonho's girlfriend of three months, jaehee, who was cheer captain, had come to our house so we could all leave as a group. hoseok grabbed my hands, pulling me in for a kiss. "you look amazing, hyung."

i heard someone clear their throat, and laughed as i saw yoonho glaring at hoseok.

"you hurt him, and i'll make sure you never walk again." he warned.

"don't talk to your hyung like that, yoonho!" my mother scolded, having reappeared with her camera. "okay, picture time!" she squealed excitedly

"everyone get together!"

the night was a blur of laughs, drinks, picture taking, and bad dancing. i was by hoseok's side the entire night, bubbly and clingy.

our table consisted of three couples: myself and hoseok, namjoon and his date, which ended up being a guy from our biology class, and jackson and mark.

after a few drinks, namjoon and i took over the dance floor. our dates watched from the table as namjoon and i fought to keep standing as we danced all night to the shittiest songs, not a care in the world.

i hadn't seen much of yoonho all night, after he'd dragged jaehee off to the dance floor, but i wasn't worried about him; he could take care of himself. i also knew jaehee didn't drink, so he'd be safe with her.

i ended up pulling hoseok to the floor when a slow song came on, and i circled my arms around him as we moved slowly in a circle.

"i love this song," i said to him, enjoying how we swayed gently to the music.

"i love you."

i looked up at him, eyes wide.

"it's okay if you don't feel the same, you don't have to say it ba–" hoseok was cut off by my finger pressing against his lips.

"i think– i think that i might love you too."

and with that, i connected our lips in a long kiss. out of the corner of my eye i saw a flash go off and instantly I knew it was most likely namjoon.

"i think your friend is taking pictures of us," hoseok chuckled, pulling away. i sighed, my cheeks red.

"sorry. i can ask him to delete them." i stared at his shoes, embarrassment coursing through me.

"no, no, it's okay. actually, see if he'll send them to me." hoseok grinned, displaying his bright white teeth. i looked back up at him, a smile spreading across my own face.

the song ended then, the music abruptly changing from soft acoustics to loud, in-your-face beats. hoseok stepped back, letting go of me. "i'm gonna go get us some drinks, okay? i'll be back. go dance with your best friend." he pressed a quick kiss to my cheek and grinned before walking away.

i turned, still red. immediately once i reached our table, everyone was all over me.

"oh my god, that was so cute!" mark exclaimed.

"by the way, i got an amazing shot of you two kissing. want me to send it to you?" namjoon asked.

"and to think that mark and i would win prom court!" jackson laughed.

i looked at jackson with confusion. "wait, what? of course you're going to win, you're like, the school's power couple. what are you talking about?"

my friends gawked at me. i sat there, feeling like there was something i didn't know that they did. finally mark spoke up. "yoongi, hyung, people have been going crazy all night nominating you and hoseok."

i blinked. "oh."

how had i gone from the introvert who did extra credit work in his free time to a prom royalty nominee?

"here, hyung." an arm reached over my shoulder and placed a cup of punch on the table. hoseok rested his face on my shoulder, grinning at my friends. "how are you ladies? looking lovely as always." hoseok joked, receiving a glare from jackson.

just then, a loud, piercing sound rung through the air. we all turned to look at the stage at the front of the ballroom where our senior class president, kim seokjin, stood in a elegant navy blue suit, fiddling with the microphone.

"excuse me, hi, people! hope you're all having a great time. sorry to interrupt, but it's time to announce our nominees for prom court!"

a cheer erupted from the crowd, mainly from girls. i took a sip of my drink, biting my lip anxiously. half of me wanted to win, but the other half wanted desperately to avoid the attention and run.

jin took out an envelope from inside his jacket. he took out a piece of paper, reading it quickly. "lets see. so, we have jackson wang and mark tuan!" the spotlight landed on our table, illuminating the couple. cheers erupted from all around the room, and the two laughed.

"byun baekhyun and park chanyeol!" the light moved across the room to where the couple sat, both smiling as people cheered. "and a last-minute nomination, but this one was a killer. i don't think i've seen this many votes come in so quickly and so late. but anyway, our last nomination is min yoongi and jung hoseok!"

for a moment, i couldn't see anything when the spotlight landed on us. it was shining directly in my eyes, and i squinted as i hid my face in hoseok's jacket. loud cheers rang in my ears, and i looked up at hoseok wide-eyed.

the room hushed as jin took out a second piece of paper from the envelope. "and this year's prom royalty is...drum roll please?" several students obediently started drumming on the tables, and jin beamed. "thank you. your prom royalty is... yoongi and hoseok!"

claps and cheers rang out from all around us as hoseok pulled me to the stage. i looked out at the people i'd spent years avoiding in fear of them judging me, and now they had crowned me and my boyfriend prom kings.

the crown was a bit heavier than i expected, and it nearly fell off my head as i posed for a picture with hoseok. he cupped my face and kissed me passionately as the camera went off.

my life had become a sort of fairytale in the last few months, but i had forgotten about how some fairytales didn't get a happy ending.

and i may not have known it at the time, as i shyly waved for the yearbook photographers, hoseok at my side, but mine certainly wouldn't.
