"Tell me again why you aren't going with Chad..." I say pinning back the last curl to create Ellie's messy bun.

"Because he never asked." She huffs.

"You could have asked him." I offer but receive a glare.

"No. Jay. I'm not going to ask him. I shouldn't have to ask him to the formal. I'm the girl!"

Ellie moves away from the mirror and I apply another layer of lipgloss.

"GIRLS ARE YOU READY?" My mum calls up the stairs. Ellie's parents came over so we could have photos together before going to the formal. Grabbing our clutches which are filled with our phones, spare make-up and bobby pins we head downstairs. "Oh my god you both look stunning!"

My mum hugs me doing her best not to ruin my appearance. Ellie's mum does the same to her while our dads look over at us happily. The door bell rings and mum rushes to the door. When she opens it she reveals a very dapper looking Junior along with Diana and Tom. Mum welcomes them in and Diana gasps at Ellie and I before Tom tells us we look pretty.

"He beat me to it." Junior whispers in my ear as our parents position us for photos. "You do look gorgeous Jay."

"You look pretty dashing yourself."

After a lot of photos we head of to the formal in a limo which is picking up some the other football players and their dates including Chad.

"Ok now I wish I had a date." Ellie says as the limo pulls up at Chad's house.

"Don't worry Elle there is plenty of 'me' to go around." Junior says with a laugh putting an arm around both of us.

"Thanks Junior."

Chad hops in the limo next to us with ... a date, Kate.  The look on Ellie's face tells me she wants to kill him. Junior notices and squeezes her shoulder.

"You both look very nice." Chad says staring at Ellie.

"Thanks Chad." I say quietly.

"What about me?" Junior asks breaking the tension causing everybody in the limo to laugh. I pull out my phone and Junior looks at me confused. "What are you doing?"

"Teaching Chad a lesson." I whisper.

Me: Hey do you have a tux?

Matt: Yeah why?

Me: Put it on and meet us at the formal.

Matt: What happened?

Me: Stop asking questions and get dressed. Ellie need you.

Matt: On my way.

I slide my phone over to Ellie showing her my message feed and she smiles.

"Thank you." She whispers.

...

"I can't believe I'm got invited to the Senior Formal!" Kate gushes as we walk into the bathroom. If the girl keeps going she is going to get a slap in the face. From me and Ellie. We decided a bathroom break was needed before entering the function hall. Mainly so it gave Matt enough time to get here so that Ellie could enter with him.

We make our way back to the boys and Kate throws herself on Chad who stumbles back slightly confused. He looks over at Ellie but she has already looked away and is talking to Junior. He shifts his gaze to me and I can't help but glare at him.

"ELLE!" Matt's voice causes all our heads to snap towards the entry way. Matt runs over to us pulling Ellie into a hug. He spins her around. "I'm so sorry I'm late. If I'd known how gorgeous you were going to look I would have got here sooner."

"You're here now and that's what matters." Ellie takes his hand leading him into the formal.

"I thought he was gay." Chad pulls me back to face him after pushing Kate off.

"Why do you care?" I snap, "you have a date."

"Jayleigh..." Chad looks at me defeated but I grab Junior's hand following after Ellie and Matt.

"Why the hell did he bring her?" I mutter under my breath.

"Maybe he likes her..." Junior offers and I glare at him, "or maybe he is an idiot." He adds quickly.

We find seats at a table with our group, Mark and Jackson didn't get to come tonight because they flew home a few days ago but Junior and I promised to go visit them soon. Ellie is next to me and Junior with Chad and Kate across the table from us. I notice Chad staring at Ellie and I have to bite my tongue not to snap at him and ask him why he brought Kate.

Instead I focus on the food that is put in front of me and having fun with my boyfriend and best friend. We eat, joke and dance the night away before the student body president, Tammy one of Ellie's ex-friends, steps on stage to announce the King and Queen of the Senior Formal. The room goes completely silent, like hear a pin drop silent as she open the envelope.

"This years King is Chad Murphy." The room erupts at the sound of Chad's name and Kate jumps up and down clapping and squealing like an idiot. Chad makes his way to the stage and a crown is placed on his head. He waves regally causing many people to laugh. Tammy takes the microphone again, "ok, and this years Queen is... Ellie Hart." The room erupts again for Ellie and she stands slowly making her way to the stage. Of course it is Chad and Ellie they are the most popular people in school. A tiara is placed on Ellie's head and Chad leads her out onto the dance floor where they supposed to waltz in front of everyone. Chad takes Ellie's hand in his kissing the back of it causing the room to 'awe'. The two move in sync with the music before the beat changes and more people join in.

At the end of the night Ellie and I find ourselves back at the table massaging our poor feet.

"So you and Junior are heading straight to the hotel?"

"Yup. Are you ok getting home?"

"Yeah I'll be fine."

"Are you ok Elle? Like with the whole Chad thing?"

"I'm done." Ellie replies with a shrug.

"What?" I ask confused.

"I'm done. I'm done trying. I'm not wasting my time on Chad anymore. We have like a week left of school then Christmas, then I'm moving to Sydney."

"You're sure?"

"Yep. I'm done."
