Not yet an adult
But no longer a child
And caught somewhere in between
Attempting to hold on to happinessStill in high school
Taking honors classes
Expected to be a genius
Only treated like a first graderNot old enough to vote
But old enough to drive
Expected to always be responsible
Told that they never wereHas a restaurant job
And gets paid minimum wage
But it isn't good enough
Even toddlers can do betterFinding joy in fantasy worlds
Explaining their moral implications
And is told to grow up and be mature
Treated like puberty never happenedNot yet an adult
Trying to be mature
No longer a child
But still wanting to play
Letting go of happinesBecause they must be mature
Must be wise beyond their years
Must never make an error and
Must Grow Up
