Maya's POV

"So is he your boyfriend?" My dad asked, while we were both waiting for the light to turn green.

"Dad!" I cried out, annoyed.

What a stupid question. Of course he wasn't.

"What?" He asked, his high pitched voice full of suspicion.

"He's just a friend," I replied, rolling my eyes at him.

"Yeah right," he chuckled, "I give you 2 weeks," he added, his eyebrows high on his forehead.

I leaned back into my seat and closed my eyes at his stupidity.

We drove for another 5 minutes until my father asked me a question I never thought he would.

"Do you know a guy named Max, going to your school?" He asked, slightly nervous.

I looked at him for a few seconds before responding. Why was he asking me this and where did he know Max from?

"Yeah obviously, there are like 20 Max's at our school. Why?" I replied, curiously waiting for his explanation.

"Just a question."

"No that's not just a question," I said, emphasising 'just'. "You obviously know a guy named Max," I added.

"I don't know anyone, I just heard of the guy."

"Yeah right, so which one?" I replied.

"Drop it Maya."

"Of course, mad because I was keeping secrets, but you do the exact same." I annoyingly responded.

He hit the brakes pretty hard, making the car come to a total stop.

He placed his hand on my seat, above my head.

"Listen.. this attitude, where did it come from?" He asked, his face going into serious mode.

"Nowhere," I shrugged, "It has always been here, New York kept it inside I guess."

He put the car in drive mode again, but quickly glanced at me before driving away.

"Control it, 'cause I don't want you to be grounded for the entire year."

I sighed and looked out of the window. A grin appeared on my face when I thought about the game I played with Sameed. I almost forgot how much I loved playing sports.

..

We arrived home and I tried to escape the lecture, but my father knew me too well.

"No," He said standing in front me.

I was about to go upstairs and lock myself in my room. I don't wanna be here when he tells mom.

"Hey honey," Dad said as my mother approached us.

She greeted us back and kissed my forehead.

"What's wrong?" Mom asked, looking at us, back and forth, feeling some kind of tension between us.

"How was your day Maya?" My mother asked, facing me.

Dad scoffed at her question, making my mother face him with a confused expression.

"So is somebody going to either explain or respond to my questions?" She said, annoyed by the silence.

"Maya was with a boy," Dad quickly said and left as fast as he could.
