Chapter 62

I was having such a great time with Vincent’s family.  Italia, her personal assistant Karyssa De Masi and I headed out early this morning we had a full day planned for today.  Our first stop we got a full body massage, manicure and pedicure.  Once we were finished at the spa we went to brunch, I got to know a lot about Italia and Karyssa.  Italia is the daughter of a well known CEO of a major consulting firm and her mother stayed home and took care of her and her two brothers.  Her oldest brother Emilio Campisano still lives in Italy and is in charge of her father’s consulting firm in Italy.  Her other brother is Raffaele Campisano and he is a physician in Maryland.

“So Karyssa are you an only child?”

“No I’m the youngest in my family.”

“Oh wow, you have three other siblings; do they live here in New York?”

“Three of us live here in New York, but my other sister lives in California.”

“Wow she’s far away, why did she decide to move all the way out there?”

“Well she’s married and her husband is station at Fort Irwin, in Barstow California.”

“Oh ok, that must be fun being able to move and see new places.”

“My father was in the Air Force and I hated moving every two or three years.  We would always have to change schools, adapt to whatever environment we were in and the part that I always hated was making new friends.”

“I bet it was hard for you as a kid.”

“Yeah but once we became teenagers we learned how to adjust and it didn’t bother us as much.”

“So tell me about you Nikki.”

“Well I am the youngest in my family; I have one brother Alexander, Alex for short and one sister Ebony.  We were born and raised in Charlotte, NC.  My brother lives in Colorado and he is a science teacher and the head football coach at Lincoln Mason High School.”

“My sister Ebony is married and a professor.  She teaches African American Studies and she is now pregnant with her first child.  She has been married for 5 years to her husband Royce.  I love her so much she is my best friend and we talk about everything.”

“My parents have been married for 35 years and they still walk and hold hands and give each other kisses in public which is cute but not for my parents.”

“Oh Nikki, I think that is so cute that your parents still show everyone how much they love each other.”

“I know Karyssa, but do your parent’s act that way?”

“When I was younger they did, but the older I got the more they started arguing and fighting.  The last time we moved I was in my junior year and my mother walked out on us and that was the last time we saw or heard from her.”

“Oh I’m sorry Karyssa; I didn’t mean to bring up bad memories.”

“Don’t worry about it Nikki, after 10 years she found me on Facebook and asked if we could meet and talk.  At first I wasn’t willing, but after I took a day or two to think about it, I decided that I really wanted to hear what she had to say for herself.”

“Of course you had to be curious; did you tell your siblings about your meeting with her?”

“Yeah I did, but they didn’t think that there was any excuse she could have given could explain to them why she walked out on us. I went any way to hear what she had to say.  She told me that she was hooked on drugs and she wasn’t ready to give it up and she felt it was better if she left us with our father, we would be better off.”
