monday.
the day before the girl mike so dearly loved was set to leave for arizona.
he'd be twenty-five hours away from his first and only love.
how could either one cope with that soul-crushing fact?
their minds racked with endless possibilities of how to escape their inevitable doom.
the same doom that seemed to follow y/n wherever she went.
but they both knew,
at the end of the day,
that she was leaving despite their anger and prayers.
y/n spent that night in mikes arms.
not making a sound,
not making a move,
just laying there as one.
she burned his cologne in the back of her mind and began to replay the times they spent together,
all the jokes they made,
and the love they created.
she giggled into his chest for the first time in weeks,
drawing mike's attention.
"what? what's funny?"
"remember when lucas threw a pebble at you so hard that you cried a little?"
mike chuckled,
"woah, woah. i didn't cry, it just...instinctively brought tears."
"yeah, right. you were practically on the ground weeping."
"oh! like you weren't screaming and crying when dustin stepped on your book!"
y/n let out a string of laughter,
"it left a shoe print! and-and he folded one of the pages up!"
their laughter continued for another minute or so,
and then it died down.
"but we fixed it, didn't we? we got the shoe print off, and we got the page back to normal."
"that, we did. and we fixed the little scratch from the pebble."
"mhm. made it all better when you kissed it."
y/n laughed breathlessly,
and let her finger fan the base of his throat.
she inched closer to his lips and laid a loving, tender kiss to them despite the sadness that tainted their hearts.
she pulled back slowly and looked down at him,
his eyes closed but a smile spread across his lips.
"i'm gonna miss that."
"oh, just that, huh? not me?"
"eh, i'll manage. but kissing you? damn, it's practically a drug."
their laughter continued again,
and y/n realized that despite their hurt,
she wouldn't have this night any other way.
together,
laughing as one.
he ran a hand down her cheek and kissed her again,
never wanting to break apart.
her lips sent a wave of vehemence into mike's body,
it was nearly intoxicating.
"i love you, y/n."
"i love you more."
"your love is a small, dim shadow compared to mine, my love."
she giggled and rolled her eyes,
before mike left a kiss to the tip of her nose.
y/n was growing tired,
and so was mike.
mike tried to fight it,
but his eyes spilled every secret he wanted to hold.
he wanted to spend their last hours together awake,
laughing together like they had always done,
but they were exhausted.
and mike knew y/n deserved some rest.
"goodnight, my love."
he mumbled onto the top of her head,
she cleared her throat of the knot forming,
"i love you too."
y/n tried to hold her sobs back as she closed her eyes,
but soon drifted off to the sounds of peaceful breathing,
scared for tomorrow to come.
