Every year it ends up being the same. There's always an awkward feeling around Christmas, one you wish you could get rid of.
Your family and Ryan's family have always been friends, which just makes things worse. The two of you were in a relationship for a while, years ago, but things ended terribly and you hardly ever talk to each other anymore. So, it's just Christmas that's the difficult thing.
Your family and his always get together at some point during the holidays. You and Ryan always spend the whole thing avoiding each other, or if you do end up in a situation where you have to talk to each other, it is very awkward small talk. You've always gotten the feeling that both yours mothers hope the two of you will reconcile someday.
But this Christmas, thing are different. You've got a new boyfriend, one you really care about, and he cares about you, too. He's a good guy, and you think this is something that could last for a while.
At Christmas, when it just happens to come up in a conversation that you're in a relationship, you hear Ryan ask, "You're dating someone?"
Everyone turns to look at either him or you. He looks startled and shocked.
You nod. "Yeah. Yeah, I do."
As the conversation gets turned away to something else, you can't help being a little annoyed. Why was he so surprised to hear you found someone else? What did he think, you were never going to move on with your life?
Unless he's upset. Maybe he misses you. Maybe he regrets how things ended.
But that couldn't be, could it? You've both moved on with your lives.
But you do catch him staring at you more than once.
