Everyone at Manderley was surprised to hear that Mr. de Winter was coming back ,and that he was bringing a new wife along with him. It was always said how much he had loved and adored his first wife, Rebecca, but it hadn't really seemed that way to you. However, you've always known your place, and knew better than to make any comment about any of it.

On the day Maxim de Winter returned to Manderley, you were a little surprised when you saw the new Mrs. de Winter. She seemed nothing like Rebecca de Winter at all. The first Mrs. de Winter had been a grand, gorgeous woman, with all the beauty and wit that went with it. This young woman was different. She was still young, and seemed more shy and nervous. But she didn't seem like a bad type, so you didn't mind.

You don't see the new Mrs. de Winter up close until one day when you're doing some sweeping around the house, and you happen to go into the room where Mrs. de Winter's desk was, thinking it was empty. But Mrs. de Winter is there, staring down at the desk. She looks up at you when you come in.

"Oh. I'm sorry," you say as you step back. "I thought the room was empty."

"Oh, I don't mind," she says quickly. "Please, do your work. I don't mind."

So, you step forward again and begin sweeping. As you do so, you glance over at the new Mrs. de Winter. She has been looking down at the contents of the desk.

"Is there anything I can do for you, Mrs. de Winter?" you ask, trying to sound polite.

"Hmm?" She looks up at you. "Oh. No, thank you. It's just...very strange, seeing all these here." She waves a hand to gesture to the desk. "All these things here with the first Mrs. de Winter's name on them. I...really don't know what to do with them."

"If you would like, madam, someone can have them taken away for you," you suggest.

"Yes, perhaps. Tell me, what is your name?"

 "Y/N, madam."

 She nods. "Thank you, Y/N."

You nod and leave the room. It probably isn't swept properly, but you can always go back again later.

The new Mrs. de Winter is young, and shy and a little nervous. But she is also very soft-spoken, and seems like the friendly, honest type. What a change from the first Mrs. de Winter! You can see why Mr. de Winter loves this young woman.
