Eponine is your best friend, and you aren't at all surprised when she winds up by your side at the barricade. You told her before this all started that it was going to be dangerous, and that she ought to stay as far away from here as possible, but it seems she didn't listen when you said it.
"So, Eponine," you say to her, "I could have sworn I told you to stay away from here. There is a very good chance we're all going to get killed, you know."
"I know, and so does everyone else here," she says. "We are all though, aren't we?"
"Yes, that's true. I can't blame you for wanting to fight. I am assuming that's why you're here?"
She looks away from you, and hesitates to answer.
"Eponine, please look at me." You try to make eye contact. "Why are you here? Are you in trouble?"
"No. No, I don't think so. I'm trying to keep someone else out of trouble."
"Someone else here? Well, who?"
"It's Marius, Y/N," she answers. "You know him, don't you?"
"What, Marius Pontmercy?" you ask. "Yes, of course I know him. But we're all in danger here, Eponine. Whatever it is you want to do might not work."
"But I still have to try. You...I don't know if you would understand."
"If I would understand?" you repeat. "Eponine, what are you talking about? Why are you worrying over Marius Pontmercy?"
She sighs. "Well, you know what my life is like. I've told you about my family, what we do. It wasn't always the way it is now, but...that's how it is. Marius is a friend, my only real friend other than you. I think he's a great young man, and he'll go on to be a great man one day."
"Well, now I understand," you say. "You're in love with him, aren't you?"
"Yes. I love him, Y/N. I really am in love with him. Think of the life we could have together, and how much better it would be than the one I have now. But it won't happen, because he isn't in love with me. I don't think he even knows I'm in love with him."
You wrap your arm around her, and let her hold onto you as she begins to cry.
"What's going on here?" Enjolras asks you.
You nod towards Eponine, and whisper, "She's in love with Marius, but it seems he doesn't love her back."
He sighs and turns away from you, and you get the feeling this isn't the first he's had trouble with Marius.
"It'll be all right somehow, Eponine," you say. "Somehow."
You don't know how it feels to that in love, but you feel for her now. She came here and risked her life to make sure the man she loves is safe.
You look up, and see Enjolras talking with Marius. You can't hear them, but you think they might be talking about Eponine. Then Marius walks away from Enjolras and over to you, and you whisper, "Eponine, stop crying a moment."
"Eponine," Marius says, "Can I speak with you?"
She nods, and says, "Yes. Of course."
You nod to her, and watch them walk away together. You can't hear what they say, but Marius takes Eponine's hands in his, and it seems that he's apologizing for something, and she smiles and throws her arms around him.
You smile watching them together. It would seem that Eponine's love was reciprocated, after all.
