Jo is a character who wasn't on The Vampire Diaries for very long, but is someone who I think really deserved better than she got.
Jo was born with the name Josette Parker, and was the twin sister of Kai Parker. Being twins of the Gemini Coven, they would have to merge when they were twenty-two. But their father knew Kai would win, and that he was not fit to lead the coven, so Jo's parents kept having children until they had another set of twins.
By time Kai was twenty-two, though, he had figured out why his parents had so many children, so he planned to kill Liv and Luke and merge with Jo. But Jo was the one who really saved the day, because she cloaked her siblings so Kai couldn't get to them, and then relinquished her magic into a knife which she kept hidden, and Kai wasn't able to merge with her.
After those events, Jo went on to become a doctor, and worked in the army as a medic for a while before leaving to teach medicine at Whitmore College, where one of her students happened to be Elena Gilbert. It was while she was there that she was reunited with Liv and Luke, and met Alaric Saltzman.
Jo and Alaric fell in love, and they planned to marry after Jo discovered she was pregnant. Since she was pregnant with twins, and twins of the Gemini Coven were expected to merge, Alaric suggested they leave and hide after the wedding, hoping that the coven wouldn't be able to get ahold of the twins.
Jo was murdered on her wedding night by her twin before she and Alaric got the chance to finish their wedding ceremony. Alaric did try to resurrect her with the Phoenix Stone, but it never worked. But Jo did find peace.
