Anna's exact age is unknown, but she was turned into a vampire by Katherine Pierce while she was a teenager. Anna and her mother Pearl, both vampires, lived in Mystic Falls in 1864, where Pearl worked as an apothecary. They were both friends with Katherine Pierce, who was also staying in Mystic Falls at the time.
When the council started hunting down vampires, Anna and Pearl planned to leave Mystic Falls, but Pearl was captured and entombed along with many other vampires, and Anna spent the next 145 years trying to find a way to free her.
When Anna first appeared in Mystic Falls in the first season of The Vampire Diaries, she befriended Jeremy Gilbert in order to gain access to his ancestor Jonathan Gilbert's journal, and she kidnapped his sister Elena to use as leverage so Bonnie Bennett would open the tomb where Pearl still lay. However, Anna and Jeremy began to develop genuine feelings for each other, and, after a lot of asking, Anna had finally agreed to turn Jeremy. The relationship revealed a nice and caring part of her personality.
Anna met her end in the season finale of the first season, when she was murdered along with several other vampires by the town council. However, she reappeared as a ghost a the end of the second season and some of the third season. She and Jeremy still had feelings for each other, which wound up ruining Jeremy's relationship with Bonnie Bennett. But Anna was reunited with her mother in the end, and they were able to stay on the Other Side together.
