Chapter 2

Phillip's parents and older sister Eliza walk by.

Mother: Phillip?

Father: What the hell has gotten into you?

Eliza: You should be ashamed of yourself and your relationship with this elf.

Anne runs off in tears.

Phillip: Anne! Anne! Hey! Stop! (Looks at his family, in anger) There you go again.

Eliza: From being a successful playwright to going on dates and about to propose. What has gotten into you? How did this happen all of a sudden?!

Father: Get out of here. We want nothing to do with you.

Phillip: How dare you do this again.

Mother: No blacks allowed in this family.

Father: We're disowning you. If you guys have children, we want nothing to do with them, either, because they won't even have a race. Mixed black and white.

Phillip: Whatever. I'm in love with her and y'all can't change that. Goodbye. One more thing, again. if this is my place I don't want anything to do with it. (Runs off and finds Anne.)

Phillip shouts Anne's name and finds her at the circus tent, preparing to rehearse, it's obvious she's been crying.

Phillip: Anne?

Anne: They did it again.

Phillip: They are small minded people.

Anne: I know that. you said those exact words last time. (Pulls and prepares the ropes)

Phillip: I was disowned.

Anne: (looks back at him as tears stream down his blue eyes.) I'm sorry.

Phillip: I have a question, answer me honestly, please (takes out a tiny box from his jean pocket.) Anne Wheeler, will you marry me, if all goes well?

Anne shakes her head and pulls away.

Anne: No. I can't do this. I'm sorry, but no one will ever accept us together.

Phillip looks at her sadly.

Phillip:
You know I want to marry you
It's not a secret I try to hide
I know you want to spend the rest of your life with me
So don't keep saying that our hands are tied.

You claim it's not on the cards
But fate is pulling you miles away and out of reach from me
But you're here in my heart
So who can stop me if I decide
That you're my destiny?

What if we rewrite the stars?
Say you were made to be mine
Nothing could keep us apart
You'd be the one I was meant to spend my life with
It's up to you
And it's up to me
No one can say what we get to be
How do we rewrite the stars?
Maybe the word can be ours
Tonight

Anne gets on the set and grabs the ring

Anne:
You think it's easy?...
You think I don't wanna marry you
But there are mountains
And there are doors we can't walk through
I know you're wondering why
Because we're able to be just you and me
Within these walls
But when we go out side you're gonna wake up and see
That it was hopeless after all...

No one can rewrite the stars
How can you say you'll be mine?
Everything keeps us apart
And I'm not the one you are meant to marry!
It's not up to you
And it's not up to me
When everyone tells us what we can be
How do we rewrite the stars
Say the world can't be ours tonight

Both:

All I want is to fly with you (grab 2 ropes)
All I want is to fall with you (fall off the ropes and on top of each other)
So just give me all of you! (Anne tearfully grabs Phillip's neck)

Anne: It feels impossible!

Phillip: it's not impossible!

Anne: is it possible?

Both: Say that it's possible? (Spin in place on a stronger rope)

How can we rewrite the stars?
Say you were made to be mine
Nothing can keep us apart
Cause you're the one I was meant to spend my life with!
It's up to you
And it's up to me
No one can tell us what we can be
How Do we rewrite the stars?
Changing the world to be ours...

Anne:
You know I want to spend my whole life with you
It's not a secret I try to hide
But I can't have you
We're bound to break (pause)
And my hands... are tied.

Anne walks away in tears

Phillip disappointedly walks off and blames his family.
