Abigail: (Finding her brother on the balcony) Fritz? (Pause) I...heard what happened.
Fritz: Why can't Emily be part of our family?
Abigail: She already is.
Fritz: Mother doesn't act that way. She took us off track on purpose this morning!
Abigail: I know.
Fritz: I just don't understand why she doesn't like Emily.
Abigail: I think Mother's fine with Emily as a friend, but you know how set she was on you and Ariana.
Fritz: But I never met her, and I didn't love Ariana Wembern. I love Emily.
Abigail: I know. And Mother knows it too.
Fritz: Then why doesn't she understand?
Abigail: Because she loves you. She can't believe you're grown up, and she won't believe you want to leave her and Father. Even if it had been Ariana, I think Mother still would have had a hard time letting you go.
Fritz: It isn't that I want to leave because I don't love Mother and Father anymore. Or you and Jacqui and Franz either. But I can't stay if Emily isn't welcome here.
Abigail: (Gently) I know. I know.
