Dim beams of light spread throughout Arias Valley as darkness was exiled, a light haze of fog still clouding the town as animals wandered aimlessly while there was an absence of humans. Chirping, buzzing, and cricketing could be heard as nature became restless, awaiting a new day to start.
The water of Garbani River was racing however, just as usual. It never became any less ruthless as it cut quick corners and overturned multiple times mile after mile before it would eventually reach the Pacific Ocean. Intriguing, it was. Dangerous just the same. The river could take anybody away in the matter of seconds and that was terrifying.
The people of Arias Valley were unbothered by everything happening outside though. They were curled up in their beds, unaware of just how perfect everything was functioning. The valley was okay and unthreatened for now. Of course, until they did awaken and went about their business.
I was here though. I was awake as the Chester Forest bustled with life. It was interesting to watch from my windowsill where I was unseen by four deer walking across my backyard. It was early for even them. Four o'clock and dawn was barely breaking but here they were, strolling across my back lawn like they owned the place.
It made me smile to see them here. There was even a fawn in their small group, jumping around as the older deer stopped and grazed on the grass.
I couldn't do much to stop the small chuckle that followed as I watched him scurry about, almost falling multiple times. You could tell his limbs were still a bit flimsy but he was doing a good job at getting around, at least I thought so.
I was tempted to take a photo but I didn't. Nature was meant to be left alone. Not to be a hypocrite of course, I did enjoy looking at beautiful photos but I didn't want to interrupt their peace with the shudder of a camera. James would tell me that I should've taken the chance to capture them but he would just have to deal. I was completely fine with concealing the memory in my head.
After a few minutes of just watching the deer, a family of bunnies jumped across my yard and that was enough for the larger animals to feel imposed on. They pranced away quickly and my lips pulled at the corners.
An honest smile from me, Kara Danvers.
How rare.
"See you tomorrow, guys," I muttered quietly as I got up and shivered from the cold air that had crept into my thin pajama pants and shirt. Holding the small smile, I went into my closet and looked in the mirror.
I was tired, and I definitely matched the description. There were light bags under my eyes from nights of restless sleep due to the fact I was starting senior year, today. It was stressful and my parents high expectations were no different. Stay on top of everything, my dad reminded me too often this summer. Sadly, he didn't mean classes. He meant stay on top of the social class. Stay the most popular, the prettiest, but never, ever the smartest.
In this town, beauty wasn't defined by the measure of your intelligence or effort. It was how you looked, and that was hard to manage.
Nonetheless, I did.
There's no room for failure in my family. Not when Alex Danvers is your sister.
When my eyes focused on the mirror again, my smile was gone from witnessing the playful fawn in my backyard. All I saw was Kara Danvers, the queen bee.
My hair was messy and my eyes were more grey than blue but that was fine. I was just tired.
Walking over to my athletic wear, I moved my hands through the hangers of clothes before pulling out a black tank top and dark blue joggers. Don't get me wrong, I didn't mind yoga pants but living in Arias Valley, the days after August 15 became cold and wet as autumn returned early again.
