Maya knew what time it was

Maya knew what time it was. It was kind of hard not to know when her alarm clock had that glaring blue color telling her what time it was in a way mocking her to get up.

She reluctantly got out of her bed and walked towards her bathroom. She studied her dark brown skin, dark brown eyes drooped from her lack of sleep trying to finish homework late last night. She did her facial routine and headed to the shower.

Once she finished she put on her clothes and headed downstairs.

"Good Morning mom," Maya greets her mother.

"Hi sweetie," Arlette replied in a sad tone.

"What's wrong," Maya automatically knew something was wrong with her mother. Normally, in the morning Mrs. Johnson was always upbeat and brewing coffee. However, on this morning Arlette was just sitting on the couch, no coffee, and had a distant look on her face.

"They called."

The color from Maya's face drained.

No please no.

"He's okay. He's just getting re-stationed  to Vietnam." Maya's mother said.

Maya knew that they were going to get a phone call about her father soon, but the reality of it is just tough. Dan, her father, had been stationed overseas when Maya was 15. She has a really close relationship with her father and always FaceTimed, Skyped, and called whenever she could.

"He's going to be okay mom," Maya reassures her mother.

"I know it's just...hard you know? There's always that thought in the back of my mind that something wrong is gonna happen and he gets hurt," Mrs. Johnson rambles.

"Mom," Maya sits on the couch next to her mother and puts her hand on her shoulder. "He's going to be fine ok? All we have to do is keep praying and hope for his safety."

"When did you become so wise?"

Maya shrugs. "TV I guess," she says and laughs.

"Har har now come on get you some breakfast before you're late," Arlette says and jumps up from the couch to start on her coffee.

Maya walked into the doors of Lakewood High School. Everyone was talking among themselves, playful fighting between the jocks, cheerleaders talking the latest gossip, and nerds discussing the causes of science. Maya felt that she didn't really fit in to any of the cliques.

She was just...well...herself.

"Hey Maya," Maya heard a familiar voice as she opens her locker.

Maya turns to the culprit. It was Ariana, her best friend from elementary, middle, and now high school. Ariana was very pretty. With her caramel complexion, dark brown hair that came down to her back.  She was also tall.

"Hi Ari, how are you?"

"Tired. But guess what?"

"What?" Maya replied.

"There's a new student! Not to mention a guy student." Ari wiggles her eyebrows while spilling the tea.

Ariana was also the friend who had all the gossip from the cheerleaders even though she couldn't stand their guts. She once said, "The only reason I talk to them is for the gossip" and that's how Maya stayed caught up with the "drama" and gossip at school even though she really couldn't give a schist.

"Really? Well, that's cool I guess," Maya replied while situating her supplies in her locker. "Also, I think I already met him."

"What?!? What do you mean you already met him?! Did you guys talk?! Did you hook up? Oh my god did yo-"

"Ari!" Maya interrupts her rambling.

"Sorry...you know I get carried away. So what happened?"

"He might possibly be my new neighbor," Maya whispers. Praying that Ari didn't hear her.

"YOU'RE NEW WHAT?!
