MAYA

"You hungry?" Scott asked me as I was driving out of Taylor's neighborhood. Am I hungry? I guess I am a little bit, since I haven't had anything to eat since I got back home from school.

"Yeah, I could eat. Do you know a place?"

"I do, actually. There's a place not far from here called Bernie's Diner. They have the best burgers. You think you want to check it out?" Scott asked looking excitedly at me. Again, how I can say no?

"Sure. Where is it?"

"Alright, so you're going to take a right at the light, keep straight, and then take two lefts," Scott says, gesturing towards the road.

"How do you know about this place?"

"A couple weeks ago, my family and I went there. We weren't actively looking to go to Bernie's Diner, but we stumbled upon it. We were trying to find something to eat, but everything was crowded of course on a Friday night, but we saw this place that didn't have a lot of people, so we went there."

"I don't think I've ever heard of this place before, and I've lived here my whole life."

"Yeah, it's pretty hidden and it's the only one to exist in the country," Scott says, shooting a glance toward the window.

"Are you serious? That's so cool! Now I have to go here!"

I took the first left, excited to go to a place that has been around for possibly my whole life, but now I'm getting to experience it. Scott laughs at my sudden excitement.

When I pulled up to the diner, the parking lot was nearly vacant. I pulled up to a spot closest to the light. Before I can unbuckle my seatbelt, Scott was already out of his seat and on his way to my side to open the door.

"You don't have to do that every time, you know," I say, smiling at him as I got out of the car.

"I know, but I like to," Scott says, closing the door behind me. "You ready?"

I nod as we both start walking towards the small but quaint building. On the front of the place, it says, "Bernie's Diner" in an illuminating blue. Scott opens the door for me as we enter and head to the hostess table.

"Good evening. Is it just the two of you tonight?" says the hostess.

Scott and I nod at the same time, and she leads us to our table. We thank her in return and sit across from each other in a booth close to a window, where we could see my car parked. Scott and I skim the menu together in silence, before Scott speaks up.

"What do you think you're going to get?"

"I'm not sure. The burgers look pretty good...oh and the milkshakes do too!" I peer closer to the menu while noticing all the milkshake flavors. Scott laughs and nods in agreement.

"Yeah, from the one milkshake I had it was really good. So was the bacon cheeseburger; you know,I think that's what I'm going to get," Scott grins, putting down his menu after deciding.

"Ok, I think I'll get that too. Wait, what milkshake are you getting? There's so many to choose from."

"Yeah, you're right. Well, I got the chocolate milkshake last time, so I'm going to try the Cookies 'n Cream this time," Scott replies. "Which ones are you looking at?"
