You and Draco weren't anything other than potions partners. He was friendly to you sure, which was more than could be said for any other Gryffindor. You two often chatted before and during class, you even had several other classes together. History of Magic, Transfiguration, and Divination together in the evenings. You appreciated Draco's deadpan humor and didn't mind him ribbing you in potions. After all, you could dish it just as well as you could take it. But in the hallways between class and on the weekends, he always seemed to be flanked by other Slytherins. He would give you a polite head nod, but his friends' body language made it clear that you were not welcome to join their conversations.
After a few weeks it became clear to you that Draco was just out of your league socially. He was obviously very popular and girls from every house fawned over him. You understood now why Pansy hated you so much, she fell over Draco's every word and shadowed his every step. Draco seemed to tolerate it, but the second-hand embarrassment was too much for you to watch. Pansy was either delusional or desperate and you thought that if she had any real friends, they would tell her to seriously tone it down.
Being a new student anywhere was difficult, but it felt especially difficult being a transfer student at Hogwarts. In your forgotten single bedroom at the top of the tower, you missed out on a lot of connections other girls in your year were making with each other. You were friendly with Hermione Granger of course, but she spent most of her time with Harry and Ron who weren't too keen on letting you into their "Golden Trio". You found it hard not to resent them for this. Harry and Ron seemed to distrust you because of your friendly relationship with Draco Malfoy.
Sometimes you spent time with lavender brown, and sometimes you'd strike up a conversation with Neville Longbottom, but you were struggling to make meaningful friendships. None of this was helped by the fact that the wizarding world of Great Britain was so much different from the American wizarding world. In America, the wizards were more closely connected with the muggles, and you had been raised by an American muggle family. Coming to Hogwarts, you were totally shocked to hear that anyone still cared about blood status.
You were willing to put all of these differences aside, however. you were just tired of eating alone in the dining hall.
"Draco. Hey man. Draco." Blaise Zabini noticed draco staring at you across the dining hall. He had been doing that a lot lately.
"What?" Draco muttered.
"Why don't we head out to the quiddich field after dinner tonight?"
Draco gave him a strange look, "Yeah sure." He said.
Blaise Zabini was Draco's closest friend, and the quidditch field his favorite place on school grounds. Blaise and Draco would sometimes get together to practice a bit in the evenings after dinner. Blaise wasn't actually on the Quidditch team but he enjoyed flying and whenever he suggested he and Draco go out to practice, Draco knew that Blaise had something he wanted to talk about. While they were headed out of the dining hall they ran in to Pansy. Which was definitely not an accident on her part.
"Oh! Hey Draco, you aren't headed to the common room are you?" She said, as if she hadn't been waiting for Draco outside the dining hall for 20 minutes so she could casually run into him.
"Hey Pansy, we're actually headed to the Quidditch field." Draco said flatly.
"Oh well I was thinking maybe tonight we could work on our divination homework together? You know because Venus is in retrograde right now, it's the perfect time to work on our romance charts." Pansy had been planning this all night. Venus was the ruler of love and according to Professor Trelawney, anything could happen when it went into retrograde.
"I can't. I'm busy." Draco didn't even look at her. When would she get the hint?
"Oh, okay, well next time then." And she turned away to hide the disappointment on her face.
Pansy was just out of earshot when Blaise said, "Dude, that was hard to watch. I mean, that was cold" said Blaise. "What are you going to do about that?"
"Do about what?" Draco said, annoyed.
"She's had a crush on you for years, mate. You know that."
"So? What am I supposed to do about that?" Draco really didn't like talking about Pansy. "In case you haven't noticed, lots of girls like me. I'm the Prince of Slytherin."
Blaise socked him on the shoulder, "I told you to stop calling yourself that. So, why not Pansy? I mean why not just hit it and be done with it, you know what I mean? She's not ugly and she's literally throwing herself at you."
"Gross dude, I don't want to do that. I've known her since we were, like, six."
"Okay so if not Parkinson, then who? Since everyone is in love with the Slytherin Prince?" Blaise was always prying. He was so nosey.
Draco grabbed his broomstick and slammed his locker shut. They were alone in the Slytherin changing rooms.
"Did I hit a bit of a nerve Malfoy?" Blaise said, always a pusher. "Who is she?" Blaise already knew who it was. He was just waiting for Draco to admit it, but he had gone silent. "It's that Gryffindor isn't it? I see you looking at her in the halls. I mean come on man, you're potions partners with a Gryffindor this year and nobody's supposed to think anything of it?"
"So what Blaise!?" It was a good thing there wasn't anyone around, because Blaise had gotten Draco pretty riled up. He was good at that. "I like her okay? Is that what you want me to say? I like (Y/N)!"
"Yeah that's what I was looking for." Blaise grinned. "So what are you going to do about it?"
"Nothing. I don't know." Draco said as they exited the locker room. "She was sorted Gryffindor. She doesn't want to date me. I've seen her hanging around with Granger. I mean can you imagine the stuff she's telling her about me?"
Blaise laughed, "Yeah man you've done some fucked up shit to granger and her friends, but I think we can fix it. I'll help you out, don't worry." Now, are we going to play or are we going to stand around and kick rocks about Gryffindors?
