Chapter 8: Destroying Ice

Lesedi

"Who wants the last wing?", Mason shouted out.

You would expect two extra-large snack boxes from Superbowls to last us through the night.

I mean we were talking, Guacamole and chips, Red hot buffalo wings, Grilled beef lettuce wraps, Mac & Cheese bombs and Minced pork quesadillas.

But clearly, I had underestimated our appetites; and we hadn't even started playing cards yet.

Pablo barked in response while eyeing the wing Mason was swinging in the air.

"Here you go boy", he called out while throwing the wing in Pablo's direction.

He caught it while it was three feet in the air without the slightest hesitance.

"Good boy", Mason approved to a now otherwise preoccupied Pablo enjoying his chicken wing.

Noah and Aiden had hit it off way better than expected.

Well, at least they did after Aiden broke the ice.

Wait, did I say broke? I meant DESTROYED.

We were sitting quietly on our couch, drinking beer and watching Mark Wein devour Tacos in Mexico when Noah broke the silence.

"Hey man, can you pass me a quesadilla?", he asked Aiden.

"Depends man... ... ...Do you like my girl?", he asked casually while taking a sip of his beer.

I spew out the beer I had in my mouth and Mason started choking on his, coughing hysterically.

On the other end Noah, just burst out laughing, laughing to the point of tears.

"Dude, what the hell?", he managed to blurt out between hysterics.

Aiden just remained unfazed while he got some tissues out of the tissue box to clean the beer off my lap and off the table.

We all waited in silence until Noah settled down.

'He called me his girl' , I thought, zoning out for a second while smiling like a dazed teenager.

After Noah had finally calmed down, he flopped back on the couch to catch his breath.

"Well?", Aiden finally cut in.

"No. She's like a sister to me.", he spat out.

Aiden just turned and looked at him curiously.

The tension in the room could have been hacksawed.

Mason and I just exchanged awkward side glances, not really sure what else to do.

I mean, since Aiden started this whole shebang, it was not like I needed to save him from the boys (which I thought would be the case). Instead it seemed like I needed to save the boys from him.

But hell, Noah could handle his own so I might as well just let it work itself out; or at least that was my logic for staying completely silent throughout this entire ordeal.

After a few moments of silence, Noah gave in.

"Fine. I had a crush on her when I was five, okay?", he blurted.

"She offered to share her lunch with me during recess because I had forgotten to bring mine and I thought she was awesome...well that was until she kicked me...in the balls...because I tried to kiss her. All sense of infatuation went out the window after that one. I couldn't walk properly for a week!", Noah finished with a sigh.
