The day Ryan had to have his debulking operation, I had to work. I felt guilty for not being there for him, but he assured me that it was fine. As Sandra worked for herself and was in charge of the business, she took the day off to stay in the hospital while the operation was in practice. The thought of someone being there for Ryan when he woke up made me feel a little better.
"I'll be here as soon I finish work," I told him, as he lay on a hospital bed.
"Don't worry," he said with a kind smile. "Take your time."
Sandra also smiled at me, as I stood up to leave the room.
As I took a seat at my desk, I logged into the computer. I drummed my fingers off my desk as the screen repeatedly buffered and I waited on the computer to load.
"Evelyn," called my boss, the editor, from his office.
"Yes," I said.
"Come into my office for a moment," he said. "I need to talk to you."
I released a sigh, as I stood up. I assumed that he had heard the news about Ryan and wanted to talk to me about it, as well as the fact that my concentration had been lacking at work since I found out. I walked towards his office, and closed the door.
"Take a seat," he said.
I did so, and waited for him to speak.
