I hear the door to the apartment swinging open with a creak. It must be Evelyn. I open my eyes and sit up slowly on the sofa. I glance to my watch. She's only been gone for forty five minutes. I had expected her to take longer.
As she enters the room, I greet her. She doesn't say anything back. Instead, she heads for me and takes a seat beside me. She scoots as close as she can to me and rests her head aganist my chest. She slumps slightly, burying her face into my shirt. I semse that there's something bothering her but I don't address it directly. I just place my hands around her and hold her close to me. I lower my face and press my lips to her forehead.
"I love you," she mumbles.
I lie back on the sofa and she moves in harmony with me, resting her head on my beating heart.
I run my fingers through her hair and cuddle into her, my free hand in hers as we share this moment of sweet embrace.
"I love you too," I say.
It couldn't be more true.
