The boy liked the girl's parents. But he didn't think she could say the same about his mom.

The mom made no sound, unless she was answering a question one of the parents asked her, smiling coyly.

The boy looked down at his plate and ate, every time his mom spoke. From the corner of his eye he saw the girl watching his mom, curiously, hanging onto every word as to find out what kind of person his mom was.

He didn't want her to know what kind of person she was.

To save it, he excused the two of them early, saying they needed to get home. The girl glanced up, frowning. As did the rest of the family.

The girl followed him to the door, shooting him questioning looks. He didn't answer them. Instead — in the middle of the doorway — the boy took her hands and kissed her lips.

I'll call you later, okay? he said.

He and his mom took the bus all the way back home.
