Bailey lied across the bed on her stomach while I told her what happened with Steve, "I think we really hit it off!"
She smiled, "Really?"
I smiled back, "I sure hope so considering we're going out on Friday."
She clapped, "No way! Soda and I made plans for Friday, too!"
I sat on the bed next to her, "What're y'all doing? Drive in movie?"
Bailey shook her head, "He can't sit still that long so he's taking me to DQ."
I sighed in content. How'd we manage to snatch the hottest guys in town for a night?
"We better get to sleep," With that we both climbed under a blanket and drifted to sleep.
The morning came quick and soon enough we were out the door.
Normally we would be off to school but summer had just started so we worked most days instead.
The diner we worked at was on the edge of town. When we got there, Heather was already taking orders but that was because her shift started an hour sooner. She did what she could to get as many hours as she could in. We all thought it was reasonable considering she had to provide for two before she had even graduated.
It was strange to see the change in her behavior once her responsibily was upped. She was jumpy before but would still have a good time whenever we were together. Nowadays, she was stressed. She did work hard though and it eased her stress when that payed off.
Bailey threw me my apron and notepad.
Before we knew it, we were running around as much as Heather had been.
Our shift passed quickly and we were locking up pretty soon. Because my car was broke and the other girls didn't bother driving this morning, we were stuck walking home. We each had a switchblade to use for protection if it came down to it but for now we stuck to power in numbers.
Bailey's house was closest so we walked in that direction first. We had almost made it when we heard a car behind us. We tried walking faster first but soon it was driving alongside us. It was clearly a Soc's car and the people in it were clearly Socs. As they got out of the car we stepped closer together. We knew not to pull a blade out this soon or else they would up their force or pull out a weapon of their own.
A boy in a mustard sweater stepped forward, "What are dames like you doing out all alone? Need a ride?" He gave a chilling smile.
"No thank you," One of us said but I didn't know who. He stepped forward again and my leg shot out, kicking him in the groin. As he leaned over in pain the other three men he'd been with came at us. Heather was quick to deck one while Bailey kneed another in the gut. The third one came at me and I elbowed him in the face. They were fighting back but we were too. With a right hook to the jaw, the guy in front of Heather collapsed on the ground. The man Bailey kneed a few good times was clutching his stomach and the one I'd elbowed was coming back for more. I elbowed him again and when he stumbled back, we ran for Bailey's. Once inside, we waited for them to leave and then Bailey offered to drive us home. We were thankful for it.
