At 11:45, Heather and I met up and started towards the diner.
The place was all but empty and at first glance, there was no staff in sight. Paying closer attention, I noticed Lucy leaning against the bar with a small plate of fries and Veronica in a corner booth leaning over the table to kiss Steve.
I glanced at Heather and saw a trace of humor in Heather's eyes.
She gave a small smile and shook her head before walking over to grab our aprons. We tied them on and then I walked over to Veronica.
"We're taking over," She pulled away from Steve suddenly only to take the seat next to him when she heard my message.
I rolled my eyes and returned to Heather who was straightening the tables, "I'll take the customers that just sat down at table nine if you'll finish up here."
She nodded and started wiping down the tables that had a sticky film.
"What can I get you?" I asked to start off a very long shift.
Even at rush hour, business never picked up much and Heather and I spent the day finding random tasks to fill our time.
When we finally closed up, I turned and met Soda's gorgeous grin.
"Thought we could spend some time together," He said as he wrapped me in his arms.
I nodded and said goodbye to Heather and then we set off for the Curtis household, Heather walking home in the other direction.
Darry was very hospitable and Pony just seemed tired. After dinner, Pony went straight to his room while Darry brought dessert to the table.
I glanced back towards where Ponyboy had left to and Darry put a comforting hand on my shoulder, "Don't worry about him, he's just not feeling well." I nodded and turned to Soda only to be poked in the face with a spoon, a sticky residue being left behind.
Before I could question him, Soda grabbed a napkin and started stuttering as he wiped the cherry filling from my face, "I'm sorry. I-I was, uh, trying to be all-all cute like you see in movies, but your mouth wasn't open and you turned too fast and-" I chuckled lightly, cutting him off.
"Don't worry about it Soda." He got really concentrated as he continued wiping at my cheek. When he finally got it all off, he looked down sheepishly.
I grabbed my spoon and grabbed a bit of the cherry crumble, turning Soda towards me by his chin. I slipped it in his mouth and he grinned, "You're much better at that." I laughed before he continued, "Let's hope I get better before we have to do it with cake at our wedding."
I blushed but couldn't help the huge grin that spread, "You think we'll get married."
"Of course!" Soda started only to be interrupted by Darry clearing his throat.
"I'm just gonna go," He said before slipping off his chair and trying to subtly sneak over to the sink to clear his plate.
Soda turned back to me, "So as I was saying. Of course we'll get married, that's what people who love each other do."
I bit my lip, "So, what will this wedding be like?"
Soda didn't hesitate, "Don't know the time of year yet because that depends on when we get engaged, but we'll have a five tear, better than anything cake. Veronica and Heather will probably be your bridesmaids, and I'm assuming Anne will be the flower girl. Steve will be my best man, Darry and Pony my groomsmen. The colors probably a sunset shades of pink and orange. I imagine your bouquet will probably be full of irises that match the colors. And after the reception, you'll throw it and Veronica will catch it and then she and Steve will get married."
I smiled wider, "That sounds perfect. What do you think our lives will be like together?"
He smiled at the ground as if he was embarrassed he'd already thought about it, "I'd like for us to stay in Tulsa, get our own house, and for me to open up my own garage in town. And we'd have a perfect little family. A dog named Lucky, a son named Eli, and a daughter named Iris. You know, after your favorite flower."
He looked up with hopeful eyes and I had to admit, that was a future I'd be very happy with. I couldn't stop myself from kissing him, putting all of my enthusiasm for our future into it.
