I had decided to surprise Steve with lunch to help keep him from worrying about the boys too much. I got him food to go from the diner, Bailey packed one for me to take to Soda but she couldn't take her break until later, and now I was on my way to the little gas station across town.
I walked in and found Steve, a smear of grease on his chin and his tattoo just visible beneath his sleeve.
"I brought lunch, boys," Hearing that they both came quickly.
I handed them each their bag and they dug in.
While Steve was stuffing his sandwich into his face, I reached up with a napkin and wiped his chin.
He looked at me but then went back to eating.
They'd just finished when a guy walked in. He gave me the creeps, even just his presence.
"Hey, Tim," Steve said cautiously.
"Any of you seen Dallas?" He asked.
They both shook their head but Soda spoke, "He ain't been around here."
Tim scrunched his mouth in a look of disgust, "Damn fool slashed my tires again."
Tim stormed out.
I finally spoke, "And here I was thinking everything I'd heard about Dallas must have just been rumors."
Soda shrugged, "He's been a lot better recently. We don't know what caused the change but it's definitely for the best."
Steve laughed, "It's funny. He used to talk about how he didn't like little kids. We all about lost it when we saw him with Anne."
I smiled, "He is pretty sweet with her."
Soda grinned, "Yeah, real cute, ain't he?"
We all laughed but it was time for me to head back to the diner. I kissed Steve and started to walking.
