chapter twenty two: the gate

rebecca was sitting in the middle of max and lucas in the front while mike, steve and dustin were in the back.

"nancy?" rebecca heard and she turned around to see mike giving steve a weird look.

"dustin, make sure he doesn't touch his face." rebecca said.

"no, don't touch it." dustin said pulling steves hand away.

"you're doing great so far." rebecca told max.

"hey, buddy." dustin said shushing him.

rebecca looked back at steve and frowned at how swollen his face was.

"it's okay. you put up a good fight. he kicked your ass, but you put up a good fight, buddy. you're okay." dustin told him.

"okay, you're gonna keep straight for half a mile, then make a left on mount sinai." lucas said.

"what's going on? oh, my god!" steve said seeing max was driving.

"steve, just relax. she's driven before." dustin told him.

"yeah, in a parking lot." mike said.

"that counts." lucas said.

"oh, my god." steve said again.

"they were gonna leave you behind." dustin said.

"oh, my god." steve repeated.

"but i promised that you were gonna be cool, okay?" dustin said.

"max, slow down." rebecca told her but she kept her speed.

"whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. what's going on? oh, my god. no! whoa! stop the car. slow down." steve said.

"i told you he'd freak out." mike said.

"will you all shut up." rebecca said with a sigh.

"stop the car!" steve shouted.

"everybody shut up! i'm trying to focus!" max shouted.

"oh, wait, that's mount sinai. make a left." lucas said.

"what?" max asked.

"make a left." lucas said again as max hit someone's mail box.

everyone in the car started screaming when max made a sharp turn to the left.

"we're gonna die." rebecca said.

-

max finally came to a stop in front of the hole that hopper got stuck in.

"hello!" steve shouted when max slammed the breaks.

"whoa!" dustin said.
