Chapter 7: Betrayal

"___" Called Light from a distance. His voice struggling to overshadow the sound of traffic. Your feet rest in sandals as your toes curl around the damp morning grass outside the headquarters. You turn to him, a warm smile on your face.
"Good morning, Light" you sang as he caught up with you. Your warm eyed gaze up at his own much colder ones. His expression changed from confident to blank. Your sudden warmness unsettled him.
"Good mood today, huh?" He asked as he held the main door open for you. You slip past him still smiling.
"Life is too short to fret" you say as he follows you close behind "you would know that better than most, correct?" Sheepishly you smirk as you twirl around to face him. Light is not amused with your antics.
You push the button to the elevator and instantly the doors open. Light allows you to enter first as he continues to follow you. You rest your back against the elevator wall as he pushed the button to the highest floor. The doors close. Light turns to face you.
"You may think that you are clever, ___" he says in a low tone. His arm reaches up and his hand finds the wall behind you. He hovers over your small frame. Looking down at you with confidence. "But, you are not more clever than I am. I hope you know this" his tone was that of warning. Even that of a threat. You hold back any signs of intimidation, but you do not attempt to challenge him. This is all part of the plan.
"I do" you smile as you speak "I realize you have me in quite a predicament, you have the power in this situation" you must make him believe this. It is crucial for your own survival. If Light feels threatened he can not only ruin your life and career, but he could take your very life away. Your pride must be set aside for the greater good. You have prepared yourself. "Honestly Light that isn't such a bad thing for me" Light raises his eyebrow with curiosity.
"Explain" he demands. You eagerly oblige.
"It's less stress for me having you know my secrets. It means you are at will to protect them with me. You have not exposed me, so you obviously want something from me. So, Light, lets benefit each other" you smirk. Light takes his hand off the wall behind you and takes a small step back. He chuckles slightly.
"How do you supposes we do that? What use do I have for you?" He asks
"You tell me" you rebuttal "what do you want from me, Light?"
The elevator dings as it comes to a stop. The doors open as Light gives you one last small smile. He turns and walks out the elevator doors with you following him now.

"Hey!" Misa yells as both you and Light walk into the main conference room. She runs to give Light a hug but before her arms reach him he pushes her back so hard it makes her fall to the ground. "Huh?!" She gasps as she looks up at him. He does not return her gaze. Light makes his way over the the center of the room where L sits in his usual position. You look down at Misa as she glares up back at you. If looks could kill you would be 6 feet under.
"___" L calls you over. You ignore Misa and make your way to the couch across from him. You make sure to get close to light as you sit. Light give you a look signaling he recognizes you've sat very close to him on purpose. You look back with a small smile.
"Really good mood, huh?" He asks you again. You give him a small laugh.
"What's gotten into you two?" L asks knowing you and him had a plan that was being carried out. It is important for Light to think L is just as ignorant as you. But, something in his voice seemed genuine. Jealous, almost.
"Yeah what the hell" Misa adds as she makes her way over. Her eyes still sending daggers.
"Misa go get us some snacks from down the street" L commands
"Huh?! I'm not your intern! Make ___ do it!" She protests angrily. "What is she good for anyways?" Before you can rebuttal Light steps in.
"More good than you. All I've heard you do since you've gotten here is bitch. Why don't you go get the damn snacks and stop interrupting the adults speaking? I don't see you trying to catch Kira." He sternly glares at her "I need coffee, black. Go, now." Tears swell up in her eyes as betrayal stabs her heart. Light was sometimes mean to her, but seeing him so close to you, and treating her like this was too much for Misa to handle.
"Be careful how you speak to me Light!" She demands. You were shocked she was arguing with him. Lights eyes light up with anger.
"Who are you to tell me how to speak?" He yells "leave now Misa. Before you regret this"
"It's you who's going to regret this, Light." She growls back "you'll see" She turns away and runs for the door. You look back at light confused.
"What do you think she'll do?" You asked quietly.
"Get us some snacks if she's smart" L chimes in. Light chuckles in agreement.
"She's a stupid girl ignore her" Light reassures you. You all nod in agreement.
"With that out of the way I have a mission for you both" L begins with a long sigh "there were two more murders. Both heart attacks, both probably Kira."
"Who were they?" Light asks. You give him a side eye, but look away quickly to make sure he does not notice. Unfortunately, L did take notice and gave you a small stern look.
"Haruto Sato suspected kidnapper and murder and Kaito Tanaka accused rapist." L explained. You sat back quietly, wondering if one of them was the men Light murdered the other day in front of you.
"Strange isn't it?" Light asks in an almost condescending tone. If L wasn't on your side even he probably would have missed it.
"This is strange for Kira." L continues to speak keeping an eye on Light "usually he only goes after murderers. These sex criminals aren't his usual targets"
"Not too strange to think about though." You add "He seems to be someone who wants to enforce justice. You said 'accused' and 'suspected' were neither of these men tried?"
"No" L answers simply
"Maybe this was Kira's justice. Maybe he was seeking revenge for their crimes in his eyes" you explain. Looking at light for a moment. He looks back at you pleased.
"Even if so, we have to catch him" Light gives you a small faint side smile, one L could not see.
"Agreed" L says standing. He slowly walks to the large window beside him, gazing down at the city below. "I have a list of accused sex offenders. I need you both to keep eyes out on the ones I give you. These files will be your guide." L gives both you and Light a small stack of papers.
"How should we go about this?" You ask as you flip through the names and faces. "What are we looking for?"
"Cameras, bugs, stalk, follow, move into their houses, I don't care. Keep an eye out for anything suspicious. One of them is bound to be killed by Kira. See what they do before that happens. See what causes their death. Something must trigger it." L looks you in the eyes causing warmth fills your cheeks. Were you really catching feelings for such a strange man? Sweet and smart as he is, and you've always looked up to the idea of him. Maybe all that fantasizing about who L would be helps. But, he is not the man you thought he would be.
"We won't let you down L." Light smiles innocently. Both you and L look at him for a moment. Then back at each other.
"Good luck" L says looking only at you. With the plan you and him have in place, you know it was meant for only you.
