February 2017 | N O W | Mind's Eye

Standing in the kitchen, I was putting the finishing touches on dinner, using the spray butter to butter the rolls down. I knew how much my son loved his butter and the rolls wouldn't have been completed without spraying them down with butter completely.

I felt Sterling's arms wrap around my waist just as he laid his chin on my shoulder before giving the side of my face a kiss. I looked at him and smiled, admiring how much he loved coming behind me and wrapping me in his arms. I'd been by myself all day and just having that feeling of appreciation meant so much to me. Not to mention, I was still feeling a little irritated by the little argument that Monice and I had earlier. She hadn't made it back just yet and to be honest, I was getting a little worried that she may still be mad at me due to what I'd said about Yosef. But I wasn't speaking anything but the truth to her. I just wanted her to understand that. I would never intentionally say anything to hurt her.

"Is your sister coming down to eat with us?" Sterling asked me just as he unwrapped his arms from around me. I looked at him and sighed, expressing my sentiments without even having to open my mouth to do so.

His inquisitive expression changed just as he realized it.

    "What happened now?"

I sighed again and rolled my eyes, turning back around to finish tending to the rolls with the butter.

"She caught an attitude with me earlier today and suggested that I drop her off at a friend's. Wasn't long until she hopped out of the car, not even informing me of where she would be." I tell him.

"So, she's at a friend's house and not upstairs?" He asked, sounding concerned. "Have you talked to her recently?" He took his phone out of his pocket and I shook my head, letting out yet another sigh.

Just as I was about to speak, the front door opened and in came Monice. She looked happier than the last time I'd saw her today and she was glowing, completely. She actually looked refreshed, to be honest. Almost as if our time apart had done her some good. I actually started to feel relieved that she'd come in so that I didn't have to explain anything else to Sterling about what had happened between us.

"Hello, hello, hello!" She chimed as she came into the kitchen, her eyes landing on Sterling who'd turned around to look at her.

"Girl, where've you been? You alright?" Sterling asked her.

I scrunched my eyebrows wondering where all of this concern for her life was coming from and why was he being so persistent. She smiled and leaned against the counter, pulling her shades from her hair, letting her hair swing with a smile.

"I just went out soul searching, is all. After the talk that my sister and I had earlier, I just needed to come to a realization." She looked at me before looking back at Sterling. "She said some things that I wasn't prepared to listen to and now, I realize that she said what she said out of the kindness and the care of her heart."

Sterling nodded, seeming satisfied with her answer.

"Well, I'm glad that you're alright. This entire time, I thought you may have been upstairs resting or something." He told her before walking towards the table to get it ready for dinner.

"What's for dinner?" Monice asked, her eyes leading behind me at the counter.

"Get ready for dinner and you'll see." I managed to say.

    "I am ready." She smiled.

When she realized what Sterling was doing, she walked over to the table and removed his hand from the silverware that he was placing onto the table, taking his hand into hers. That struck a signal in my heart, sending electrical waves everywhere throughout my body, bringing my temperature up to boil. But just as soon as Sterling removed his hand from hers with a tight chuckle, I took a breather in order to calm down.
