Dawn to Dusk

I had met with Lincoln a few times after the incident. We talked about anything and everything. And slowly, our love started to bud.

One afternoon, I saw him out of the kitchen, with my brother. My brother seemed to be yelling at him, and Lincoln was sheepishly replying, trying to hold his composure. I quickly made my way to them, anger crossing my face.

"What is the meaning of this?" Approaching them. But I spoke too soon. Day, my brother, had just so happened to slap Lincoln across his face right as I reached them.

I gasped, very loudly. The anger rose more, and I grabbed Day by the hand and dragged him away. "What the heck was that for?"

"He almost poisoned me! There was a bug in my lunch!" I literally was taken aback. He slapped my love, because there was a bug in his lunch.

I turned back to Lincoln, "I'm so sorry, you can go back to your duties." He quickly scurried off.

"You're such an idiot! He's a kitchen aide! It could've landed in your lunch, because it just so happens that some bugs can fly."

"What do you care about a kitchen aide? You've never been so fond of the staff, what's gotten into you?" I paused, hoping not to give away our secret. He then nodded his head, realizing something. "You figured it out, didn't you."

"Figured what out?"

"You frickin' know who he is, don't play dumb with me!" He started walking towards me.

I began backing up, trying to get away from him. He'd gone through so much pressure with our father. . ."Day, please, no."

He raised his hand to hit me. I hid my face, trying to protect myself from him, and I felt no contact.

"Do not. Hurt Accia." Lincoln's voice rung in my ears. My head raised quickly, and he was standing there, above me, with his hand on Day's wrist. He swore him off, and Day mumbled walking away.

Lincoln embraced me, and I began crying. I fell completely into him. I tried to make out words, and tell him why Day was like this, but he just soothed me.

Later that day, I sat in the kitchen once more. Just completely fawning over Lincoln in his mode. He was cooking a special dessert for me, and he kept peeking back at me from his work station.

"We should do something." I said suddenly, and he whisked whatever was in his bowl.

"Oh yeah, like what?" He smirked.

"Well, I mean, you know it's not too late out. I think the sun's still up."

"What are you implying, Miss?"

"Finish what you're doing, and I'll show you."

He continued cooking, and soon it was in the oven baking. We laughed, we joked, and I just wondered what it would've been like if I hadn't sent him away. What it would be like, if we had fallen in love earlier.

Not too long after, he packed them up, and we went upstairs. I grabbed his hand, to make sure he was right behind me, and it felt like there was definitely something there. It just matched so perfectly, feeling his strong hand around my fragile one.

I checked to make sure that the way to the Main Room was cleared, and I darted left, him following behind me.

He giggled behind me as we ran. We went up four flights of stairs, that I knew weren't checked by guards. I peeked behind me and he had a confused look on his face, but smiled when he saw me.

Soon, we came to a door. We stopped to take a breather. "Alright. . . This is my secret hideout, that I only come here when I'm stressed, and need a break from my family."

"Alright, I'm ready." His smile was cheesy. And I rolled my eyes. I opened the door to my small patio I had put in by the staff, secretly. I made it so the guards could watch if need be, but it was hidden so well, no one would ever know what it was.

There were two lawn chairs, with pillows and blankets, a table, a small little fire, and an umbrella. When the sun went down, there were solar fairy lights around the top of the netting that surrounded the patio. The best part was it overlooked the entire city, and was just high enough to see the sunset and sunrise.

I looked at Lincoln and he was in awe of the whole thing. His mouth was agape, as he surveyed it all. Taking everything in. "Wow," He breathed. He then turned his head to notice the sunset. "Wow!"

He ran a hand through his messy brown hair that had little bits of flour in it from cooking. And just stood there, staring at the brilliant colors.

I walked up to him, and stood next to him. Looking up, he was just in awe of it all. It was quite adorable. I giggled and shied away. He looked down at me curiously. "What?"

I looked back at him, and his eyes looked lovingly into mine. "Your reaction. It was just, better than I ever thought it would be."

He smiled. "Well, thank you." He then realized he still had the treats in his hand. "Oh, here!" He paced over to the lawn chairs, patting the one that was next to his, for me to sit on.

I gracefully did so, and patiently waited for him to take the treats from the bag. He took one, circular object out, and placed it in my open hands. It was frosted lightly with a chocolate glaze. Nothing so simple, had ever look so divine. He took a bite of his, and I did the same.

It really was so simple. A cake maybe? But why in a circle? And why did it have a hole in the middle?

"It's so good." I said, stuffing my mouth with more. "What is it?"

"A cake doughnut, is its formal name." He smiled, chocolate lingered on his lips. I smiled at his freeness, his goofy side. As well as mine. I'd never felt so free with one individual than I had with him.

"I think you have something on your lips." I leaned in, closer to him, wiping his lips with the soft of my thumb. And our eyes met. Never the awkward one, he did what we all expected. A very soft kiss.

It was truly a fairytale evening. After the whole Day fiasco, and the safe room a couple months ago. It all had led up to this moment. One serene moment, with a sunset in the distance. I never felt so at home.
