At Every Turn

If I had only known, I would have
Been there and been good company
I would have showed up with coffee and donuts
We would have talked about cars and about things we'd welded
I would have told my stories
And listened to all the others

If I had known, I would have
Come just in time, instead of six years too late
I would have filled a solemn seat and prayed the prayers
I would have eaten finger sandwiches
And said my condolences
And heard the eulogy

If I had known, I would have
Been there every day of my life
For him, or her, or whomever
And who knows which one's time it is anyway
So I make the rounds as best I can
And leave my best at every turn.
