Chapter 2: May 1952

May 1952~ The Start

Katniss walks around school getting the usual judgemental looks from girls and weird and some creepy looks from the boys. She ignores it all and tells herself to get through the day and then she can celebrate her birthday with her family after school but it's hard to enjoy her birthday when girls like Glimmer Hemingway and boys like Cato Harrison make her day get lower and lower

"Hey Everdeen, can you speak Indian?" Cato says, standing in front of her, stopping her walk to her locker, she clenches her hand in a fist by her side to try and contain her anger

"Get out of my way" she snarls

"It's good that you don't. My grandad says it was funny how they all screamed in their stupid language when he ordered for the men to be shot and when he had sex with your dad's mom. Said her cries in Indian was priceless. I bet your dad—" Cato hits the ground with a big thud clenching his jaw

"You fucking bitch!" He stands right up and grabs her arm roughly... why did I punch him again?, she shuts her eyes as he raises his fist but he doesn't end up hitting her, instead a loud bang is heard, Katniss' eyes shoot open and another blonde has him pinned to the lockers

"Let me go, Mellark. It's not your business" Cato growls

"Believe me, it is. You lay a finger on her and you will be purple and blue in a matter of seconds" Peeta Mellark threatens him

"What? You got a crush on the pathetic Indian. Come on man! There are hotter, whiter skinned babes!" Peeta presses his forearm more against Catos throat and his eyes widen

"I said, you'll leave her and her family alone. You don't want to know what I'll do to you if you do. Understood?" Peeta says, Cato nods his head frantically and Peeta lets him go, causing him to gasp for air, the whole school are now looking

"What on earth is going on here?!" One of the math teachers Mrs Alma Coin says, pushing through the crowd

"These two crazies randomly started attacking me. Everyone here will agree" Cato says, clenching his throat, a lot of the students nod quickly, mostly because Catos father is Gloss Harrison father of Brutus Harrison, the same man who terrorised the Cherokee tribe, Katniss' ancestors

"Peeta Mellark, I will offer you one warning. As for you, Miss Everdeen, you will get ten welts on your back. Turn around" she instructs but before she could turn around, Peeta pushes her completely behind him, shielding her body

"That's not fair. She was the one getting picked on, do it to me instead" Peeta says, Mrs Coin nods and Peeta turns, sends her a reassuring smile and winces when the cane makes contact to his back, Katniss has to look away and try ignoring the whipping noise but she suddenly feels her hand grow warm, she turns her gaze to her hand to see a hand gripping it, she looks at Peeta who although has tears welling up, mouths "it's okay" to her, the welts are served and Mrs Coin narrows her stare at Katniss

"I'll be watching you very carefully, Redskin" she points her long finger in Katniss' face before storming off, everyone eventually walks off, muttering at what just happened

"You shouldn't have done that..." she says in almost a whimper

"No, I should've. I had enough of everyone giving you a hard time. I should've been the one punching Cato" he replies, picking up his books with a little wince

"I know but now your hurt" she says with a frown on her lips but he smiles

"I've had worse" he replies

"I'll talk to you later. Happy birthday, by the way" he walks off and she looks at the back of his head completely shocked, he knew it was my birthday? How the heck would he know my birthday?
