It was the day before performing the experiment. Steve Rogers was quietly reading a book alone when he turned around the see Dr. Erskine and Diana entering the room.

"May we?" Dr. Erskine politely asked.

"Yeah." Steve quickly replied, shutting his book.

"Why up so late, Steve? You can't sleep?" Diana asked concerned. "Tomorrow is a big day for you."

"Got the jitters, I guess." He joked. Diana gave him a warm smile.

She could tell Steve was nervous. They were all nervous and anxious. Steve Rogers would be the first super-soldier created. What if the serum doesn't work? Diana questioned from time to time. What if it goes horribly wrong? If it failed, Diana would feel terribly sorry for him. She knows how much he wanted to be in the army, and he finally got that wish by this chance. He would have to pay the consequences if the serum failed. Diana worked with the doctor and Howard Stark and made sure everything was correct. The Amazonian prayed to her God that nothing bad would happen to him.

"Can I asked you a question?" Steve said as the two both sat down in front of him.

"Just one?"

"Why me?" Steve questioned.

"I supposed that is the only question that matters." Dr. Erskine held up a bottle. "This is from Augsburg, my city. So many people forget that the first countries the Nazis invaded was their own. You know, after the last war, my people struggled. They felt weak, they felt small. Then Hitler comes along marching with a big show and flags."

"He hears of me, my work and he finds me. And he says 'you will make us strong' well, I am not interested. So he send the head of HYDRA, his research division, a brilliant scientist by the name of Johann Schmidt." Dr. Erskine continued his story, telling Steve his motivations and how evil he is. "The serum amplifies everything that is inside so, good becomes great. Bad becomes worse."

"This was why you were chosen, Steve." Diana said. "Because a strongman who has known power all his life, they lose respect for that power. But a weak man knows the value of strength and uses it for good."

"Thanks, I think." Steve said, confused. The doctor poured the liquid into his, Steve's and Diana's cup.

"Whatever happens tomorrow, you must promise me one thing. That you will stay who you are. Not a perfect soldier, but a good man." Dr. Erskine announced proudly.

"To the little guys." They all cheered their glasses together, but the moment was interrupted.

"No, no, wait. What are you doing? You have a procedure tomorrow. No fluids."Dr. Erskine said.
