The next day I ended up going to get coffee with Ashton's mom.

We both sat at a booth in the diner, nerves flying through my body at the thought of her asking me questions about my life.

"So my boy treats you right?" She smiled out.

"Yes- he's the best, you raised an amazing man" I nodded with a smile.

"Do you mind if I ask you a few questions about Cleo- Ashton never told me much besides her being your little sister" she spoke, making me immediately tense, but I slowly nodded.

"So you're like her guardian? You take care of her?" She asked.

"Yes, I do" I nodded with a small smile.

"Mind me asking why?" She spoke.

I cleared my throat lightly
"Our parents didn't provide good living arrangements" i spoke quietly.

"So you took your sister and left?" She asked.

"I went through the legal process, but yes, I got my sister away from danger" I spoke quietly.

"You don't think your mom misses her?" She asked me.

"I don't think my mom is ever sober enough to remember who we are" I laughed lightly.

Her face softened.

"I wouldn't have took her if I didn't need to, it wasn't a convenience to me, I turned into a eighteen year old raising an almost newborn- it was actual hell." I spoke out.

"I'm sorry- I didn't mean to cross the line-" "you didn't cross the line" I spoke slowly, stirring my coffee with my straw

"I just want you to understand that what I did may sound selfish, but it wasn't, I'm convinced that I saved that kids life" I spoke slowly

"I'm sure you did- I'm sorry you didn't have anyone to help you" she spoke quietly- placing her hand on top of mine, giving it a small squeeze.

"I didn't have anyone at that time, but now I have more than I could have ever imagined"
