After eating the chicken noodle soup that Mason had cooked for us, I was determined to stay awake. I needed to talk to him. However, the feeling of warm food in my belly and the relaxing sound of the fireplace crackling seemed to win out in the end. All I remember is sitting down on the couch and that was it.

When I finally woke, I was in his bed again. Only this time I wasn't nearly as exhausted as I was before. The food had seemed to help. My body felt stronger than it did earlier and my mind didn't seem as muddled. Deeply inhaling, I took in Mason's scent. My sense of smell had definitely increased over the last few days. I somehow knew that he had laid me down in here, but he hadn't slept next to me. I shifted under the covers, rolling over toward the doors that led outside onto the balcony.

I peered outside, seeing that it was still early. The sun was just beginning to peek over the top of the mountains. The red and orange hues of the morning that danced across the sky reminded me of something Mason told me once before. When he'd pick me up for our early morning class he'd always say, 'Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning.' I laughed inwardly, remembering all those car rides with him. I didn't know it then, but now I'm beginning to realize he's always looked out for me in his own way. I sighed, feeling thankful that he and I had met the way that we did. Even if it was just by chance, had we not stumbled into each other's lives the way we did, I wouldn't be here right now. Our meeting wasn't exactly something I tried to remember often, but looking back at it I realized that all things seem to happen for a reason. Perhaps us becoming friends was always meant to be.

I remembered the first time I laid my eyes on Mason Romine. It was my first day of college and it goes without saying that I was incredibly nervous. Not only did I not have a major picked out for myself, but I also had no idea where anything was. Work had kept me from attending the open house the campus had put on the week before. In truth, I don't know what pushed me to even attend college in the first place. I never knew what I wanted out of life, other than a family to call my own. Career-wise nothing sparked my interest, but it seemed that perhaps school was a good way to propel me in the right direction.

I had shown up early, as I always did to anywhere I had to be. It gave me time to calm my nerves beforehand. Jason had promised to give me a ride that day so I wouldn't have to walk. Of course, he didn't show up and I ended up having to anyway. We had been together for a few weeks at that point and I don't know why I thought this day would be different than any other. I had become used to the disappointment, but I knew he'd have some excuse for why he didn't pick me up that morning and I'd end up forgiving him. My foolish little heart thought he loved me and I guess I just didn't want to lose the one person in this world who did.

The sun hadn't been up for long when I arrived in the parking lot. My shoes were wet from the dew and the dampness had begun creeping in through my socks. It was already a shitty start to my first day. Not only that, but I had to resew the strap on my backpack the night before. It had lasted me since my freshman year of high school and last night it finally decided to give out on me. Luckily, Mrs. Monroe had taken the time to teach me a few basic stitches and I was able to fix it. I only hoped that I had done a good enough job that it would last me until I could afford to buy myself another one.
